PLEASANT TRIP
One hundred and forty seven visi
tors from Portland, Umatilla and
Huntington were guests of the La
Grande O.-W. shop employes Satur
day ami Sunday, the visitors being
employes of the same railroad at the
divisions flamed. Tliey arrived in
three Pullman cars Saturday and the
cars were parked in the La Grande
yards furnishing accommodations fori
the people who were paying a visit I
to their follow employee of this city.!
A twenty-five piece band and a
twelve piece orchestra accompanied
the party and at H o'clock Saturday
night in Monan hall a musical pro
gram was given consisting of ten
numbers by the band, several vocal,
violin and piano solos and selections
by the male quartet. C b. Pock,
superintendent of motive power, who
was a member of the .party have a
very interesting talk on railroad work
and the social side of life.
Promptly at 9 o'clock, dancing
started and a couple of hours later
a dinner was served to 320 people.
Sunday morning at 9:80 o'clock
the ball team from Umatilla matched
a game with the Portland shop team
and Umatilla lost by a score of
15 to 10. The grounds were very
muddy and both sides played at a
disadvantage. In the afternoon the
Portland team played the La Grande
shop team ami lia Grande went down
to defeat by n score of 8 to 2. Dur
ing the game a good many spectacu
lar plays brought forth applause.
This was Portland's third game of
the season and La Grande s first.
The visitors left on No. 2',i Sun
day evening profusely thanking the
i.a Grande U.-W. association.

DANGEROUS JOKES
Spokane Spokesman-Review: At '
Camden. N. J.. a young man was eat-;
jing a cinnamon bun. Some one told!
u tunny moi v, nini inr ,vuiik nin ,
laughed so heartily that he choked to ;
death on the bun. One of the great- j
est weaknesses of American journal-1
ism is disclosed in the fact that while j
all the accounts of the tragedy spe-;
cifically mentioned the cinnamon bun.,
not one of them reproduced the fatal I
joke. Yet the joke, it seems to us, j
was a more important item in the.
story than the bun. 1
It is true that the joke may have
been of a kind that has to be cen
sored by a family papor, but a more
plausible theory is that the report-
