The Baker litJi'ald came out yesterday in a siiecial min-!
ing eclifion that is a credit to any city ot any size'. , It con-1
tained three bright sections of excellently prepared mat-1
ter pertaining to the mining industry of Daker county and
the advertising was all written with a punch which indi-;
cates that old Daker is hack in her former stride. This j
issue of the Herald is one of the best that has been pro-'
duced by any Inland Empire newspaper in the past few!
years and shows not only heavy work on the part of the:
entire force, but it also shows that the hearts of those pro- '
tiucing it were in the work. .Messrs Beamish, Hendryxj
and Van Dahl, owneis of the Herald, deserve praise for;
the effort, as it shows that the Herald, like the town -in
which it is published, is advancing rapidly.
To'those who arc contemplating the use of the ivfer
enduni on the income tax bill and tiie Ji-cent gasoline tax,
tne livening Observer woulil say, go slow . It is true;
that the governor is authorized to call a special election1
in case of referendum and it is also true that special elee-i
lions where organizations desire are the places to achieve;
the ends sought. But there will be some general elections'
in Oregon and the initiative is far from dead; it is not even'
sleeping. So, to those' who seek to thwart what in every,
way seems to be just legislation, the warning should be'
sufficient. v

I'icture shows redeem themselves often. The criticism'
heaped upon them in the past for displaying crime films,'
etc., to a great extent disappears when such wonderful;
productions are shown as "Back Home and Broke." which I
was shown at Sherry's theatre this week, and "Who Are;
IMy Parents,"' shown at the Arcade a few days ago. Such
pictures as these are sermons and benedictions 'to every-1,
one who sees them. ' !'
