pected Paddock will accompany the
Trojan squad to eastern points among
them the Drake relays, the Perm
relay carnival, the national colleg
iate at - Chicago ' and ' the'-'iriter'-col-legiato
at Harvard stadium. There
ip also a possibility that a lew Pa
cific coast athletes will run at the
University of Paris meet in- France,
and Paddock may be among them.
In the relav carnival at Occiden
tal next month, Paddock will be in
competition with several men who run
the 100-yard dash jn less than .0
seconds. They include, Clifford Ar
gue, of Occidental, Charles Daggs of
Pomona, and Howard lorkelson and
Yule Martz, both of U. S. C.

Frank Borzaue, the celebrated di
rector of CosniospoliUm Productions
went with his entire company to the
Canadian Rockies, where he filmed
James Oliver Curwood s famous
storv, "The Valley of Silent Men,
amid the scenes which the author de
scribed so vividly in his novel.
Unless studio reports and the evi
dence of many beautiful photographs
taken on location are nusieaainR, air.
Borzage has not only "Nature Illus
trated" Mr.' Curwood's thrilling ro
mance of the Great White North,
but has scored another Cosmopolitan
success, comparable with his "Hum-
oresque.
Of course, this romance of the
northern wilds which comes to the
Arcade thewtro Thursday, is a strik
ing contrast to the crowded East
Side, the brieht lichts of Broadway
shown in "Back Pay,'' or the humors
of "GetKich-quick wallinKioru,
which Mr. Borr.aKe also made for
Cosmopolitan Productions. But tht
same meticulous attention to detail
and broad grasp of his subject which
characterized Mr. Borzapre's work in
the bi city studio, follow him into
the great outdoors.
:With a Cosmopolitan cast headed
by;; Alma Rubens, as the French
Canadian heroine of the Cdrwood
Story, and with Lew Cody as the
heroic corporal of the Royal Mount
ed Police, Mr. BorzaKe spent twelve
weeks in the Canadian Rockies.! From
Banff, Alberta, they followed tl.c
trail, of th story to the Veritable
"Valley-vof Silent Men" which Mr.
Curwood described so ' realistically.
They lived in log cabins, camped
with the Stoney tribe of Indians
some of whom Mr. Borzarfe enlisted
in the company; shot the rapids ol
the' Kipewa river, which runs into
the Ottawa about 225 miles west and
100 miles north of Montreal.
They climbed the snow-clad peaks
and skidded over the glaciers of the
Canadian Rockies. No city-bred di
rector could have overcome the ob
stacles which faced Frark Borzage
on every hand. He is an American
born, and was reared among the
mountains. Possibly his activity help
ed him to realize the Curwood story
on the screen in the spirit nnd amio
the scenes in which the author
wrote it.

OREGON SENATOR MAKES STRONG PLEA
FOR EUROPEAN ECONOMIC CONFERENCE
One of the soundest speeches made
during the debate of the Borah
amendment to the nnva bill author
by Senatorizing. an international eco
nomic conference was made by Sen
ator Charles L. McNary, of Oregon.
Mr. McNary is a senator who does
much time in the
senate debates, but at such times as
he has something worth while to con
tribute,, to the discussion. It would
furilitntn the business. of the senate

this respect. I regard Senator Mc
Nary as one of the strongest and
most useful men in itbe senate.
