When one hears of "fifty years in prison" little atten
tion is paid to what it means. Listen to thu Janesville,
Wisconsin, Gazette and learn its true meaning:
Fifty years ago there was a railroad just being com
pleted and operated through Peshtigo and north. It was
a year after the fire which had devastated the small saw
mill town and" the horror of the forest fires were still
fresh in the minds of the people, while the scars were ev
erywhere visible. From sunshine and freedom a young
man of this village was taken to Waupun state prison for
a murder. He is there vet. lie lias risen eacn morning,;
passed the day, gone to bed locked in a cell, risen apain. '

There was only a great stretch of wilderness across
Northern Wisconsin when he came to prison. Long ago
his name was obliterated and his, number still remained
his only designation until hooks and records were consult
