It was only seventy-five years ago that a woman of
the Middle West wrote to her cousin in New York:
"L'li-t winter I was told of a curious new device for
making fire. It consisted of small splinters of wood
with tips of some subsiorce that bursts into flame
when rubbed on a rough surface. If you can procure
some of them for me I shall be grateful.'.'
