BATTLE CREEK, Mich.,' Juno 8.
Unguarded, and with but one re
striction, 4 8 "honor men" from the
Michigan Stutu Penitentiary at Jack
son nru being given their "big
chance" at Camp Custer, near here.
The men are engaged in building
an. addition to the American Legion
hospital at Custer. They are to
be engaged ''there for the remainder
of the summer ast workmen, not as
convicts, and If, when the work
has been linished, t they have Justi
fied tho eotilid.L-net placed in them,
they will be paroled and walk for
all time from under tiie shadow of
the prison, despite the fact that
many of them atill have several
years to serve, according to their
commitment papers.
Tiie iplan ' Is an expoi'linem in
prison honor that is described by
penalogl.sts as one of tho most 1e
markabio on record. Soon the 48
are to b joined by 411 others from
the cell blocks at Jackson.
Those men have' been permitted
to come hero luni.ittended and to
work their way to freedom merely
by . doing a good day's work every
week day fur tho remainder of tin
summer and by remaining un the
camp reservation. To date but one
violation has been recorded after
nearly a month of experiment. One
prisoner violated the purole and has
disappeared. Tho remaining men
have formed an organization, witli
lis distinct court system, and have
sworn to each other that they will
not break the faith.
Some ot the men at Custer de
clared on their arrival that this
was the first time in years thai they
had slept outside of the celj blocks.
A large peicentago ot them are be
ing given an opportunity to short
en their sentences by years.
Each of th'o workers receives" a
dally wage, tho money bolng sent
to I ho prison officials. Men making
good win receive this niuney when
they have fulfilled their part of the
honor contract.
The experiment Is being trlol at
the suggestion of Harry L. Hulbert,
warden of Jackson prison.
