STRIKES BACK AT MALICIOUS REPORT
AND THOSE CIRCULATING IT.
' (From Portland Oregonian, April 26.)
"Wide ciiltulal icn, Imlli in the press ;iinl by
'pnssin.u' the word nlniiit,' lias been iven a malicious
report orisiiiiiled by th; oiponi'iits of K,-ilpli K. Wil
liams, to the ell'eet that Senator McXarv iius1iiuis
the loyalty .Mr. Williams ami is opposed 1o his
re-election, as republican national coiimiilticinati.''
saitl Thomas II. Tongue, .Jr., republican slak- cliair
nian. "While in Portland on business yesterday Slat.'
Chairman Tongue took occasion to nive the rmnnr
"one on the chin."
"I know this report to be absolutely l.ile and
untrue," continued Mr. 'I'i n.oii;'. "The story is un
authorized, unfathered and underhanded. It is el
ection propaganda pure and simple, i-renled for a
purpose, and should not mislead the friends of Sena
ior McN'ai'y or anyone else."
Part in Contest Denied.
"In a telegram to nn "hearing date of April 121,
19212, Senator .McXary said:
" 'Am taking no part in conies! for national
committeeman nor in any other political contest. In
deed, no one has ever rc(iicsted an expression from
me concerning any of the candidates and 1 have au
thorized no one to speak f' r me.'
"I positively know from recent correspondence
with the .senator that be not inly does not ii.-tion
the loyalty of Mr. Williams, but feels exceedinglv
friendly to him.
"Since his eleclion as republican national com
mitteeman for Oregon, Mr. Williams has done cv.tv
thing in his ver to build up flic republican partv
to do aw; if- with factional differences to secure har
mony and to elect the entire republican ticket at
very elect ion.
Mr. Williams Is Praised.
"Recognition by the republican national com
mittee of tho high order of ability.' and untiring ser
vice of Mr. "Williams to the party resulted in bis el
ection to the vice-chairmanship of tl; republican
national comnittee, an honor never bctore c nf erred
upon a western man. This reflects credit not only
upon himself, but upon the state of Orcg n.
"It is one of influence secured onlv bv pains
taking labor and years of er ice. It tie-aiis much
to tho state, and it would V-e a very serious mistake
at thi time fop the republican voters of Oregon to
defeat Mr. Williams ami elect a new nutti wlm
