VISITORS MANY THIS YEAR.
Numerous opportunities will present themselves this sum-
mer to enterrtuin visitors from afar. July 13 the national coun
cil of Congregational churches will pass through La Grande
about noon, east bound; July 17 a s)eeiiil train of Elks, enroute
;home to Fort Worth, Texas, will be in La Grande about the noon
hour; on July 20th Elks from New Hiivon, Conn., will pass
' through, again at about the noon hour; a few hours later will
come a special train from New Orleans, carrying Elks just
about July 21st, 600 Middlewestern homeseekers will sjiend the.
best part of a day in this valley. These are but a few of the
visitors that will crowd through La Grande during a fortnight.
They must have aCtention and it is high time La Grande com
menced to prepare. It is going to mean a great deal of work,
liberal donation of time and gas by auto owners, for auto rides
are always a popular means of entertainment.

SPENDING AN EVENING AT HOME.
Has anything taken the place of the evening at home? Can
people of l& Grande assure us there is more happiness here
now than there was when the family circle encompassed the
reading lamp; when some member of the family read aloud a
beautiful story, a lecture, or, perhaps, the Holy Bible?
Is there a man who will arise and say that progression of
the right kind has been achieved when, Instead of the family
circle, we hurriedly eat the evening meal and 'the family scatters
like sheep. . Perhaps mother and father hover ove'r a card
table until midnight, sons ami (laughters have their fraternities,
shows, pool rooms, or automobile spin. Does it outclass the
night when wisdom, mirth nnd good nature prevailed with per
haps an argument on some topic on the day ?
