, FOOD WASTE
When "Big Bill" Haywood tells the Russian Bolshevists of
the "capitalistic coi.ewracy" that exists in the United States for
the purpose cf destroying food, he evidently foigela all about
the activities o? his I. W. W.. friends a couple of years ago
when they were burning farmers' crops. Or if he docs remember
it, perhaps he legards it as a philanthropic effort to usher in
the millennium. You never can tell what color a fact or
situation will take in a lied mind.
Jt is true, however, that a good deal of food has been des
troyed in this country somewhat after the manner that Haywood
charges. There has been no "capitalistic conspiracy" other
thnn the greed of an occasional group of middlemen, who, when
a city market became clogged with fruit or vegetables or fish,
have destroyed it, or allowed it to rot, in order to keep up
regular prices, instead of giving consumers the benefit of it.
Certainly there has been no general attempt to "starve the
workingman into submission." Only Mr. Haywood's precious
I. W. W., with its ruthless warfare against' any other brand ot
labor thhii its own, lias tried to do that. But there is just
enough truth in the accusation to make honest and patriotic
Americans rather sensitive
There is, however, a vast amount of food waste ii this
country, unintentional but none the less inexcusable. It is
mainly the waste of food on the farms where it is produced and
where it is allowed to rot because of lack of labor to gat'ier it
and lock cf transportation facilities to get it to market. It if
natural; perhaps, in so new, vast and bountiful a country, but
it will not be excusable much longer. An essential part of tlu
conquest cl the continent is the thrifty distribution and con
sumption of what the continent produces.
