HACK TO TUB FARM,
Though the fanners remain gloomy, the agricultural prospect
ts hopeful, as far as the nation is concerned. For even while the
farmers have been preaching that all the profit was gone from
farming, there has been, and still continues, a plainly perceptible
movement back to the farm.
This is a natural result of the industrial unemployment.
Young men who came from the rural districts, unable longer to
obtain paying work in the city, or any work at all, have been
turning back to the land, knowing that there they can get a liv
ing ut least. Not merely have unattached men done this, but j
families by the thousand, disillusioned alike as to the permanent
profitableness of city labor and the attractiveness of life in indus
trial communities. "The advertising columns," remarks a
Rhrewd business writer, "tell a silent story in the increasing num
ber of flats and houses to rent."
Thus there is more farm labor available than there has been
for several years. , And thus the turn of the industrial' tide coun
trywards suggests full crops again this year, in spite of all the
talk about curtailment.
It is said now to be unlikely that there will be any consider
able cutting of acreage except in cotton and tobacco and one or
two other staples which have suffered severely from world con
ditions, and even in their case most of the acreage withdrawn will
be used for substitute crops. The average farmer, moreover,
however he may talk about "going on strike," usually succumbs
to the instinctive urge when seed time comes along, and puts in
his crops just the same, to the best of his ability.
Barring weather- accidents, there will continue to be plenty
of food. The farmers will do their part, as usual, in spite of
,.f,i,m,llv fortune and even in spile of themselves. May the
city workers do as well, so that in the final show-down the far
mers get the reward they deserve. '
RERGDOLL.
It will be interesting to note Germany's stand on the subject
of returning G rover Rergdoll to this country.
So far as Bergdoll personally is concerned, most Americana
would be glad to have him permanently barred from this country
and let it go at that. But when this draft dodger and fugit.ye
from American law is allowed to live openly and m luxury in
Germany while two of our soldiers are thrown into vru jor
trying to arrest him, popular sentiment, ui i -
Uncle Sam took a hand.
According to authentic reports, the two lads accused of . trying
to kidnap Bergdoll were attempting to arrest him instead, and
called upon German police for aid, only to be laughed at. These
soldiers believed themselves to be acting in accordance with their
duty, upholding the honor of their country and the discipline of
the army of which they are a part. '
No investigation or action which can be taken now will ever
remove the blot which the Bergdoll case, entire, has put upon thej
history of the United States. But in order that there be no
further disgrace caused by this unsavory youth, there should bej
no recession from the demand that he be returned at once for
fitting punishment. .
