I.A GRANDE. Mir. IS To the
, tditor of the Observer, Dear Sir:
THe' climax .of absurdity has been
I reached in th,o lengthy article headed
j"l''armer .Look Into Meat Cost" in
,the Obsci-vcr under date of March l(i,
Wo do not iiuostion .Mr. Slackland's
.knowledge of the cherry business, bui
his efforts itt dirn'redit established
I meat concerns. 'whose' reputation for
, honesty and siU-iie-dealing is, to nay
I the leust, cqunl to his own, shows
him to be cither grossly ignorant of
I the whole matter or willfully and
maliciously making false rcprescnta
I lions. ,
I It may ulso "be noted that Mr.
.Stackland kept tho hind quarters of
tnc animil, in which the choice cuts
ur"c found, for his own use. This is
:ulsrf characteristic.
Mr. Stuckland's statements relative
I to tho weights of the unimal alive and
IdrcHsed ura so imi.ossiblo as to need
no refutation iimnnir nomdit u-hn h-ive
given the mutter even a niomcnl's
I 1U u.
it.iM.U.-,,li.
Mr. Stneklund sold the front t-uar-ters
for 1 2c n pound. The meat mar
kets of La Grande have been selling
front quarters of beef regularly dur-
jing the past three months for from
nino to 10 cents a pound. These front
.quarters were not from fairly fat
meat either, but from animals fully
ruttcnod and made entirely fit for
human consumption.
Mr. Stackland evidently "hooked"
his friends for three cents a pound
for inferior beef tan you beat it?
I The assumption that the public i
being deliberately defrauded by the
retail meat markets is false and un
fair. We nre mnintnmiiif- 11 hip-h
jcluss of service, supplying the public
continuously with just the kind of
meats It demands, operating under
the highest rent cost ever known and
still piying the high scale of wages
iwnicn sitiiieu inner iicmaniis. 11 tTie
IrtllMi. Uriah,, tn nn M Ul ...b ! ,1,1
12c u pound for meats which they can
buy from us for 10c, that is the pub
lie's loss and Mr. Stacklnnd's gain
and we do not wish to interfere. We
do not believe, however, that the
thinking people of this valley, espec
ially those who, like ourselves, nre
faced with the problem of making a
fuir And just return on our business
investments, will be deceived by Mr.
Stacklnnd's propaganda, which, in
tentionally or otherwise, is false and
misleading.
Any honest investigation of the
meat business in I,n Gr.mdc can eas
ily be shown that our prices arc just
and arc fully in line with all other
business as conducted under present
conditions. .
Producers of good quality beef cat
tlo in the valley receive us high as
(i 3-4 cents per pound and the pres
ent time for cattle, and not from ;i5
to $45 per head, as stated by Mr.
Stackland.
Mr. Stackland is evidently unwilling
to apply the same standard of values
to quality in beef that he docs in
cherries, otherwise he would concede
to producers of inferior chei'ics u
right to receive a price equal to -that
received for the finest Cove product.
Would he grant such a thing? Cer
tainly not! Yet, he loudly complains
bemuse he is not offered a high price
for an animal not properly fattened
and unfit for market.
Many of Mr. Slackland's state
ments are Impossible of verification
anil the whole article shows conclus
ively that ho has given his friends a
"hum steer" literally arid is trying to
prejudice tho producer of the valley
against" the middlemen, who hit1 en
deavoring to be fair to both producer
and consumer alike
Very sincerely,
11. II. Cl.l-AVKK,

woman who neglects ktr kB- or kr
childrca for a club would stick to
her duty well unyway, th club would
not be to blame. The woman who
runs to meetings and tells other peo
ple how to take core of their children
and who neglects ler own, will ue
found out soon. It isn't the club that
is to bl ime she'd neglect the home
unyway,
1 know what a boon the club .is to
the young Kitchen Club member for I
was one of these fJr a good many
years. On the great club day I got
my work done u .little quicker than
usual, prepared all the vegetables ear
ly in the morning, mide the salad
dressing, the soup and the dessert in
the morning and arranged fur sonic
one to tako care of the two kiddies
until I should .return. What I did,
scores of others do. The Club, like
any other diversion, must not be over
done, lut it certainly is a good thi'i".
The parent-teacher circle is another
splendid institution, liut no woman
should neglect her babies for the best
club or society in the world.
It's a joy to tak-.' e-ire of the little
children, to wash for them day after
day, to cure for them through meus
Iob, mumps and whooping cough, to
do the baking, the sewing and the
general housework and it gels results,
but, oh, my dear man, it does get
.monotonous, and, to those who do all
these things, the occasional club
meeting is so refreshing.
The women of La Grande who made
tho delicious breakfast served last
year when we were enroute to tne
state convention at Enterprise, are
regarded as splendid clubwomen, liut
they certainly must be kitchen club
bers of the very greatest ability, too.
Never have I tasted such tooti as they
served that morning. I don't know
the names of the women who i.iatle
that pincapplc-peach-npiicot-orange
mixture, or of those who fried that
crisp bacon and the eggs done just to
u turn, but they have my unbounded
gratitude and appreciation they are
the best of all clubwomen kitchen
clubbers. '
I have' spoken at length on the
young club Women, but want also to
soy that the federated club is of great
help to the older women those who
hnve reared their families and who
are lonely and in need of some spec
ial occupation. It is the busy womun
who can accomplish the most and the
older clubwoman can give- time to
serve on committees, to wait on the
city council and get tho parks and-
playgrounds and the child welfare
clinics and bureaus started.
The next i.isue of the llullelin will
stress child welfare and the care of
the home.
I thank you. At present I am do
ing society work for the Oregonian
uid, nt odd moments, mothering 170
boys at Hill Military Academy.
