MINEOLA, L. I., July 7. The -big
British dirigible, anchored here since
yesterday morning, was torn from her
moorings rope this morning by a vio
lent gust of wind and a hole six feet
wide by three feet deep was torn in
her gas bag. The giant airship was
saved. from being blown-away by three
hundred men who seized rones hang
ing frorn her sides and with difficulty
succeeded in holding her.
No change in Commander Scott's
plan of departure has been made. The
return overseas will not be made to
day: On the trip back the dirigible,
will take a southern course, leaving
from somo middle Atlantic po-t and
heading directly for Spain. The R-34
will start at 5 o'clock toincrrow morn
ing, flying over Boston.

super dirigible R-34, the first lighter-than-air
machine to cross the Atlantic
oceanranchored here at Roosevelt fly-,
ing field at 9:45 a. m., Sunday, after
an acriul voyage of 108 hours and 12
nillutes which covered 3600 miles.
Passing through ' dense' banks' of
cloud, with the sun and sea visible
only at rare, intervals, the R-34 was
forced to cruise 2050 knots to reach
Trinity Bay, N. F., from East For
tune, Scotland, and 1080 knots from
there to Mineola.

COEUR DALENE, Idaho, July 7.--With
the death. here recently of Mrs.'
Eliza. Spalding Warren at the ae of
82 years, there passed one of the few
remaining participants in early his
tory of the northwestern country. Mrs.
Warren was believed to have been the
oldest living white woman born west
iof the Rocky mountains and was a wit
ness of the massacre by Indians of
Dr. Marcus Whitman 'and members
of his household, November 29, 1847.
Mrs. Warren was born at Lapwai,
Idaho, in- November, 1837, a year after
her father and mother, Rev. Henry
Harmon Spalding and his wife, had
crossed the muntains with Dr. and
Mrs. Whitman to become missionar-'
ies to the Indians of the northwest.
She was said to have been the second
white child born in the region sur
rounding tbe Nez Perce Indian mis
sion founded there by her father anil
mother.
At the age of nine years, Mrs. War
ren was tiken by her father to .the
Whitman mission in the Walla Walla
valley to receive her early education
and it was there, when she wjis a
child of 10 years that she saw Dr.
Whitman struck down by a tomahawk
in the hands of an Indian, who had
come to him ostensibly for medical
attention, and Mrs. Whitman shot
down inside, her home; With other
surviving members of the party, she
was rescued later from the savages.
The summer after her arrival at the
Whitman mission, Mrs. Warren, in
company with her-brother Henry and
her father, made a horseback trip to
The Dalles, Oregon, and .thence by
rowboat down the Columbia eivcr to
the present site of Portland. Port
land then consisted of one log build-
ling, she states. in her memoirs. There
wera two families at The Dalles, and
Astoria comprised "one little shack
of a house perched on a hillside."
Mr.' Warren was married in lHf4
and lived for a time near 'Brownsville,
Oregon, where her body, was buried.
She traveled by oxteam to the Walla
Walla country in 1859. and 'in 1873
located in Eastern Oregon, .vheie
her- children were born ' and reared.
Her husband died in 1886.
