battery" type and are not considered
to be of any value against latest fight
ing craft.
Four of the battleships, the historic
Fquadron cotiiprbing the Oregon. In
diana, Iowa and Mnssiicluisens, have
already beeu relegnled to the scrap
heap. The remaining eight, apparent
ly doomed to the same fate, uro the
Kearsarge, Kentucky, Iiiiimis, Alaba
ma, Wisconsin, .Maine, Mlssuurl and
Ohio.
The twelve vessels, built between
180S and l'.wl, represent a total ex
penditure fur hulls and machinery
alone of more than $:khni.ivni. When 1 J
placed out of commislnn they will re- j
lease for other duty approximately 11,
XH) enlisted men and nearly 400 otll
.cers. The ships long ago outlived their
usefulness as combatant units in ti
fighting licet, although when llicy were
