SHERRY'S j
"Hough and Heady"
William Farnum has another of
those virile, fighting roles in ".Rough
and Ready," a melodrama laid in
New York and Alaska. As one of
the Alaskan dance hall girls remark
ed In -subtitle "He'.t a man.' There
was- great emphasis oil the "he." And
there will be few able to repress the
same sentiment. It may be spoken
or merely thought but it wfll imme
diately assert itself. This is partly
due the author and partly due Mr.
Farnum. The former has given him
a role, that fits him as a glove. When
opposed to a man ho Is all fight,
when a woman picks on him he re
fuses ; to defend himself. Could u
hero nave more ideal manners? And
Mr. Farnum with bis fine physique
and expressive face finishes off the
rolo to the proverbial "t."
Of course w e couldn't have an
Alaskan picture without a fight,
much less a William Farnum picture.
In the' sixth reel of "Rough and
Reafly" the big encounter Is staged
(itul .it is a fight that the combined
thrills , of professional wresting and
i)0xfng matches would find hard to
surpass. The ring 13 again the Alas
kan dance hall. Everyone from the
roulette dealer to the toughest girl
la the place comes ton realisation of
what is going to happen when Bill
Straiten (that Farnum) strides
across the floor with fire In his eyes.
There Ib an intensity In the situation
that makes one catch his breath.
Then, when a moment later he comes
rolling down stairs out of the vll
jqfn's room, the suspense becomes
von tighter. With tnat tho fight Ib
brf it) tho death. A ill Bill is the live
biie when Its alt over. . It Is a real
flglit. ' One cun see the muscles of
(he participants quiver.
; "Rough and Ready" has beon
staged realistically and lavishly. The
dance hall is huge and alive with a
horde, of people. Tho snow scenes
ire excellent and thn Yellow Oulch
Street. Is a fine setting. Richard
Btoriton' and Ed Sedwlck, who pro
barad tho Btory and scennro, have
combined the elements of heart In
terest, ' pathos and melodramatic
(hrllls in the right proportions. Tliolr
itdry'ls well balanced and moves for
ward with ever-lnoreaslng Interest.
Stanton's, direction Is good from ev
ery standpoint and the camera worx
pf jrlarry Forbes is all that could be
