'TO HELL WITH THE KAI8EK,"
.. AT TJIK AKCAUK THKATKE,
WKUNKSDA t AM) THLUMMY
Story. ."To Hell With the Kaiser"
shows the way in which Wilhelm II
plunged the world into war. The
fortunes of an 'American family are
followed in the story, and in revenge
for the ghartly fate of her little
ssstcr in to Belgian convent, Alice
Monroe brines about the downfall
and death of the Kaiser, with the aid
of an American aviator. A beauti'
ful love-story runs through this pow
erful narrative. ,
Director. George Irving directed
"To Hell With the Kaiser." George
Irving also directed Metro's patriotic
production, "Her Boy, starring Hffie
Shannon and Nilea Welch. He is
prominent in the annals of the mo
tion picture, haying directed "The
Witching Hour," "The Conquest of
Canaan," and other epoch-making
pictures. On the speaking stage, he
was amounted with Charles, r rohman
for thirteen years. ',..
Author. June Mathis supplied the
scenario for this feature. In compil
; ft .-J !fu'- uvb y .
ing her data, Miss Mathis consulted
every available authority on modern
Germany. She is one of the best
known writers for the screen. She
wrote Naximova's feature, "Toys of
Fate," and in collaboration with other
vriters has furnished the original
stories of "Draft "2o8," 'The Wind
ing Trail," "God's Half Acre," and
countless other features, as well as
providing the adaptations of famous
books and plays for Metro stars.
; Photographer. George K. Hollis
ter is a specialist in photographing
war pictures. He was the first cam
eraman to go abroad for any Amer
ican company. He took motion pic
tures of the Boer War, the Boser
uprising and the Spanish-American
war. He gave up being a war corres
pondent in favor of being a camera
man. He was the photographer of
the war picture, "The Belgian." A
man in a million!
. Leading Players. The east of "To
Hell With the Kaiser'' u composed of
stars, but the greatest interest .na
turally centers around Lawrance
Grant as the Kaiser, and Beautiful
Olive Tell as the American heroine.
Mr. Grant is noted for his impersona
tions of the monster of Europe, and
on one occasion he amazed New
Yorkers by walking down Broadway
dressed as the. Kaiser. He is a lec
turer of internation repute,' and has
been associated with Anne Morgan
and Elisabeth Marbury in their work
of reconstructing French towns de
stroyed by the war. Olive Tell is
favorite player of both stage and
screen. She has appeared in "The
Silent Master," "The Cirl and the
Judge,","General Post," etc.
Scenes. The scenes in "To Hell
With the Kaiser" beggar description.
The Kaiser's Council-Chamber
shown, Belgian villages are burned
and ravaged, there are "shots" of the
trenches, and a fleet of aeroplanes is
shown in battle with rival aircraft.
In the realm of fancy, the Kaiser is
shown going to his final destination,
'the hot place.
Players. John Sunderland, who
plays the aviator, is also an aviator
in real life, having fought more than
a hundred air battles at the beginning
of the war around Liege, Namur and
Ypres. Frank Currier, who plays
Prof. Monroe, is a sterling actor who
has appeared in countless Metro fea
tures. Betty Howe is a charming
player who has been seen in . "For
France." The cast of characters of
'"To Hell With the Kaiser" is prac
tically a "Who's Who" of the screen.
This picture, which furnishes the
theme of world-wide interest, witl he
shown at the Arcade Theatre, to
morrow and Thursday.

Effigies Thought to Bring Luck.
The scarab of the land of the Pyra
mids is the expression of the hope of
official copies added little or nothing
to his information.
In explaining the necessity for caie
fully considered action at this time,
officials point out that the conditions
arising from the presentation of sepa
rate and formal communications from
the two great ' central powers '
quite different from those under which
Count Hunan's adroit proposal to hold
secret and "non-binding" conferences
was so summarily dealt with.
Now the proposition is for formal
and open discussions in a manner to
bind the principals, with hostilities
suspended in the meantime. There-
fore, the faet is recognized that the
people of America and of the entente
countries who are reaily desirous of:
peace on fair terms are entitled to an
explanation of the reasons which
move the government in rejecting a
proposal which on its face might ap
pear to bear evidence of sincerity.
Rid World of Militarism.
They must understand, these offi
cials say, the impossibility of compli
ance with these requests without aae-
I rifiee of all the safeguards which are
regarded as essential to the conclusion
of the kind of peace which America
and the allies are determined to have
and for which so many lives already
have been given; one that shall rid the
I world of German military domination
and insure it against another and eves
more savage war as soon as the Ger
manic war loras can repair uicir iuk
tered armies and rehabilitate their
strained and broken financial and eco
nomic conditions.
It was emphasized that the idea
must not get out that America does
j.ot desire peace, for the war is bein?
waged for the .realization of certain
high ideals of democracy and liberty
and not for revenge or desire to de
stroy any nation.
Another consideration which has in
fluenced the officials who are shaping
the course of these negotiations, is
the probable effect upon the German
people themselves of a, curt, sharp and
unreasoned refusal of their appeal
They hive been told by their rulers
ihat the purpose of their e"er.ies
was the destruction of Germany and
Austria. " '
Now the people of Germany and
Austria are finding out that they are
in no danger of extermination if they
cast off their armies and stop fight
ing. Work to this end has been done
by the system of propaganda i-i Ihe
enemy countries by entente and tha
American agencies. Germany and
Austria have been showered with leaf
lets and pamphlets printed in their
own languages and in defiance of the
threats of terrible punishment for ris
ing so, the people have read for them
selves clear statements of the reasons
which influence America and entente
Europe to prosecute the war to com
plete victory.
So these people are being taken
into account in dealing with the Gor
man and Austrian appeals, and the re
plies which will be made must let
them understand that it is only be
cause these appeals do not hold out
promise of a real peace on reasonable
terms that they are rejected.
Ever since Count Burian's prec?d
ing proposal was rejected it has been
realized that (he step now taken by
the Teutonic governments might Le
expected nt any time Therefore there
has been ample opportunity for dir.
cussion of the course to be followed
and the present exchanges between
President Wilson and the entente
chancellories, probably will not be pro
longed.. Every possible phase of the
situation is said to have been given
attention, even such a development as
an appeal from French Socialists for
full consideration of the German
offer. ! it r:-. i-; '--.-
Other Offers t Corn.- ' j
ositions will be followed b other "of
fers js not doubted in Washington.
Determined to save their countries
from invasions, the Austrian and Ger
man emperors are believed to be cer
tain to come forward very shortly
with more liberal concessions.
In fact the unanimous view here is
that if the entente and American ar
mies are firmly supported by their
peoples and continue the war at the
same tremendously aggressive pace
maintained since the turn or the tide
at Chateau Thierry, the time is not
far off when the central powers will
be ready actually to accept dictated
terms.
It was said at the Spanish embassy
Monday night that the appeal to Pres
ident Wilson for peace from Turkey
which the German propaganda ser
vice at Berlin had announced was
coming through Spain had not been
received. It is assumed that any pro
posal from Turkey would follow the
form of those from Germany and
Austria. - '

The occasional rains during the

the threshing operations somewhat
as well as scarcity of help, which
together make a larger per crn. of
