Universal gratification Is ex
pressed by the niitouioblle tourists
when they find accurate and read
able sign bo.trdn and marks along
a nf,w rond or a territory that Is
nc-w to the ' tourists. Between
Boise nnd Pendleton the main road
way Is very carefully marked with
slgnB, and numerous cases have
come to light this year where
r.trangers from the east have gone
to considerable trouble to expresu
their appreciation of the, gulldlng
signs.
A year ago L. C. Smith, a local
garage man, went to a great deal
of expense to carefully mark the
highways between Pendleton and
liolse. . On "telephone, posts along
the way he painted, at heights
convenient to the driver, a whlte
pnlnt band, one that would easily
attract attention. On this band ho
painted blue arrows Indicating the
way the road went, so that no mat.
tor whe.-e the tourist Is, or which
way bo Is going, he has but to fol
low the arrow and It will lead him
Into Dolse, La Grande, Pondleton,
Baker or Huntington, as the case
may be. Along- with the arrow he,
caused to bo painted the words
"Smith's garage." 1
That the public Is appreciative of
the effort to carefully "brand" the
highways over so long a stretch of
country Is fully shown by the groat
number or tonrlsta who hnve hunt
ed up Mr. Smith on their arrival
In La Grande to express their ap
preciation of the., assistance given
by the arrows. '

WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN
FRANCE, June 10. (By Mail) At

German lines:'
iWhen the Americans took over the
sector the French loaned a number of
their observers to train the newly ar-

French said was especially good, be
cause he knew every inch of the Ger

He had lived ovor tho line before the
war, and his family was still there.
I This man had escaped to France to

I' rem the observation position he
could see on real clear days his home '

Mr. Grain Farmer:
Are you prepared to handle your grain in bulk? Do not
wait until Spring and Summer when you are buried with work
and worried with labor shortage, but build your graneries now.
You can buy the lumber and roofing paper for a first-class
1000 bushel portable granary for $54.68 and it will last for '
years. Sacks for the same amount of grain will coat you
1125.00 and this would be a dead loss against this year's crop.-
A granary of this size can be moved anywhere and can be
filled directly from the thresher, doing away with high priced
labor handling and sewing Backs.
