way of under
standing the Book
except as we reud
It and reread It "and reread It; It re
quires a. heart determination to do
that, for pur threefold enemy will
rise , up and say "no" wheu we at-
tempt to read the Book.
The world will say "Yon nro too
busy" or you will think "There are
too many Important things requiring
my time to use it reading the Bible.",
Many look to Uie preacher to give
them their spiritual food. Tho Lord,
docs give his people pastors but the
pastor's study can never take the
place of one's own Individual study, j
The world will do what It can to op
pose the reading of .the -Book. The
world has a subtle ability to nil our
lives so full of seemingly Important
things, will bring so inuny crowding
opportunities for the use of our time
that we need a heart determination to
make time for Bible reading.
The flesh will also oppose it. We
become so tired physically. It Is a
remarkuble thing that one can ell
down with an interesting book and be
come so absorbed In It as to read far
into the night and not feel sleepy, fv
Hut how quickly the flesh wants, to
sleep and how the head nods when we
would read tlio Bible for an hour or
two In tho evening, ...
The devil also will hinder if he
can. He will suggest the difficulty of
understanding what we read, will say
the Bible Is a closed hook to our
minds and do all he can to bring dis
couragement. Bvt if we are to come
to an understanding of the truth mid
keep our souls strong and henlthycwe
must rend und reread the Book itself.
Not books about the Bible, nor ex
positions by man, but the Bible Itself.
In the second place, we inusf have
n heart determination to allow the
Book to mean what it says. We must
permit it to define Its own terms. We
must muke it explain itself. I will
answer questions concerning the words
and terms it uses. We go to tho Bible
unconsciously prejudiced. We think
wc know the truth and naturally sup
pose what the Bible says ought to
agree with our thought. If .it does
. not agree we are In danger of forc
ing Into it our own ideas rather than
lot It mean what It says. Wo come tc
it too often for continuation instead;

V The first railroad circus ' which
came, to, La Grande was old John
Robijlson's In l8j. , It had three
rings and the main one was exactly
at the intersection of Washington
avenue and Fourth street, the outer
part of It extending across the cor
ner whore, the small brick building
belonging ' : to Mis; Itonan . now
stands. The" outline, of this old
circus ring was visible for many
years, and was not .altogether lost
untif 'the atroets wore paved. ,
This was a big' circus and peo
ple came fronl as tar' east as Prairie,
creek to attend It. Most of those
who came from tho direction of
'Cricket Flat, east of Elgin, and
I from Wallowa, left their homes a
of the day of
I the circus arrival and eamped the
I night before, down along the river
jln the vicinity of the park. - Prob
jubly not fewer than fifty families

It was a good show, but the peo
