l'l.VIXO MACHIXKK COMMON
Kith Texas Chickens Air Itcvnminj:
Accustom"! t Aviators.
DALLAS. Texaii March 12. No
loncrv in it necessary for people to
journey lo itrmc fair or carnival to
urn birdmen poi-rorin "stunts." With
Iho coming of thousands of aviators
to t!io spv.eral trainlns ramps for
Briny flyers, airplanes have become
very commonplace in Texas.
A half dozen big machines hover
ing over a Teas town no longer at
tract attention. Texans have come
to regard the army fljers with their
dives, loops, nose spins, and similar
feats ns very ordinary. In the rural
districts the frequent cross country
flights rrom Dallas to Fort Worth,
Wichita Kails.' Waco, Houston and
San Antonio, no longer send the
barnyard flock hurrying to rover.
Even the chickens havecome to look
upon the aviators and their big
machines as everyday visitors.
Several machines were badly dam
aped by the curious crowds last fall
when the advance guard of aviators
began to make cross country flights.
Today aviators alight at will and,
asldo from possibly a few passersby
or playing children, nttrarn little, if
any, attention.
Every aviation field has Its offic
ial tester. This tenter is the Indi
vidual who makes tho first flight
with every new machine. Once ho
climbs Into the air with a new ma
chine he begins a series of "stunts"
calculate to try out the planes that
arc to be used by the flying cadets.
First lie will make a doien loops,
then a nose spin, coming out to do
a sudden dive, then a wide loop and
finish with a turn na the wing.
"These tests," rcmarl ed a tester,
a lieutenant atone of th i fields near
Dallas, "put an extraordinary strain
upon every part of the mrchiue. If
II comes out all right, 1 pit my O.
K. on It and It's ready for line, ir
it doesn't -they will soon i"ct an
other tester and Instructor."
Every day dozens of huge ship
ping crates arc hauled to the Texas
aviation fields, fjvery field has Its
assembling plant where expert me
chanics carefully unrrate the many
parts and In n few days ,n new air
plane Is rolled Into the field. Every
inch of the Irish linen covered
wings Is gone over for any defects.
Wires and connecting rods are
jerked and submitted to a heavy
weight. The steering mechanism Is
examined, the motor started and
trained ears listen to its hum. If
tills .preliminary tept shows every
thing tn be ship-shape, the long
brown ciaft with the red, white and
blue stripes on the rudder, is trund
led furthor Into the field, tho tester
mounts the seat, fastens the several
straps that hold him In, and satis
away.
Loops, dives, doho and tail spin
ning are just ordinary flying for tho
tester. Tho machlno stmds on end,
on Its nose, flys on tho side, turns
over and keeps on flying, executes
pplrals and glides, files upside down
In fact does everything hut "sit
up and beg."
The big tests on all parts of the
machine comes when a ''turn on the
wing" is executed, when tho ma
chine Is suddenly tilted lo one side
or the other and If there Is any
thing faulty with tho maehino It
conies to light. Both hands, both
feet, and the whole bead Is needed
lo "stunt" flying and the failure ot
anyone of these to act properly may
mean the end of the "stunt" and
the flyer as well.
To execute a nose and tail spin,
r.everal thousand Teet up, the motor
Is Idled and the machine Is "out of
control" of the aviator. To right
the machine he must speed Up his
engine and use both hands and feet
in setting his planes and steering
gear. Skill and coolhoadednoss are
required to regain control of the
machine. Confidence Is another
thing required In make a successful
flyer. "It can be cultivated," said
tho lieutenant tester.
Machines from the Texas fields
take to the air daily In fare of winds
blowing thirty-five and forty miles
an hour. Few of the accidents
which have occurred were due to
windy conditions, instructors claim,
Aviators refrain from flying over
Texns towns whoro thero are partic
ularly tall buildings.
You may want a box of very nice
writing paper, something that Is
better than tho ordinary. You will
no able to find Just 1hat you -want
at Sllverthorn's Family Drug Store,
8-11-tf.
