photoplay of life, which coi::e to t!ic
Arcade tomorrow for one flay only
may well be called "Life's Mirror,"
for It In merely a real production of
the greatest drama of limit: "Life."
James Oppenbelro wrote the hook
from which "Idle Wives" has been
adapted.
"Idle Wives" has but recently com
pleted a record breaking run at the
Maxlno Elliott theatre In Now York
City, where It received the commen
dation It so richly deserves. Jane
'McLean, the great woman settlement
worker, says of this master feature:
"It holds the minor up to society;
and conveys the greatest u-rmm of :
democracy which I have had the
pleasure to witness." The Rev.
Thomas B. Gregory says: It was my
great good fortune last evening to
sea "Idle Wives" at the Murine EU
lott Theatre and it was ridiculous;
It was ridiculous simply because It
I? a perfect replh-a a,"lMimun life,'
and human life Is the only rldlcu-
i Inns thing under the stars.
i "Zlt" of the New York Evening
! Journal nays: "I have never seen
i society hit as I saw the upper classes
I shown In "Idle Wives" last nlxht at
I the Maxlne Elliott Theatre." Every
person in tho world should nee this
icmcliah!, production. When these
I.i,ti!v c:.i..f ::r. 1 a yiy like "Idle
Wives" for its cervrce to humanity,
they merely express the opinion of
the many thousands who stormed
the doors of the Maxlne Elliott Thea
tre In New York City for many
weeks. To tho girl who Is discon
tented, to the husbands and wives,
to those in comfortable circum
stances who envy those in better
circumstances than they, "Idle
Wives" exerts a powerful appeal.. Its
lesson Is conclusive and complete.

A Record Saddle Mount
JOSEPH HAS EEAL ;
WIOTEE weatheb:
Who is it? Douglas Fairbanks, of course. Yes, and the trick is much
more difficult than it looks, incidentally representing the longest saddle
mount ever recorded in either real or reel life. Fourteen feet from the
porch of the house to the saddle of the peaceful looking hor3e who little
suspects the shock he h atout to get. Douglas' new Artcraft picture, "The
Man from Painted Post," discloses the fact that this mount was made with
perfect case by the athletic screen star. Very good, even for a Fairbanks,
say we.

JOSEPH, Jan. 28. (Special.)
Real winter is now being enjoyed In
Jor.cph and cold, blustery dyB have
marked the past week. Sleighing
and coasting and even skating are
all enjoyed whenever possible. This
Is truly a good country to live In
; even In the' winter, which is not so
' bad as sometimes pictured.
Fled Cross Show.
I Between $150 and 204 was clear
' Ml at the Red Cross sho7 last Sat
; unlay night. The nonce was packed
; and all twelve numbers on the pro
gram (not to mention the Jitney
dance) were liberally applauded.
The Joseph concert band helped out
some of the numbers while Miss Alta
Spaulding furnished the music for
others, fn fact everything from the
band selections in the first act to the
patriotic number In the last, includ
ing nil numbers in between such as
Mrs. Parker's and Mrs. McCully's
songs. Alum and Sox, Prof. Wise and
"Chain," Mr. Pollock's cartooning,
Miss Wastell's dancing, the "girl
numbers" and all the reit, deserve
special comment. Miss Wastell, the
director of the affair Is to be con
gratulated as are the performers,
and ail Joeeph hopes that more like
it will be put on ia the future as we
now surely know tht we have plenty
of local talent. One thing did hap
pen during tbe course of the evening
that Is to be regretted and that was
that some little boys took J15 of
I the Red Cross money which had been
taken in and although no names have
yet been mentioned it is thought that
the parties are known.
Mrs. lslie HI.
Mrs. ,nna Leslie has been nuite
ill this last week and her condition
was such that her daughter. Miss
Clara Leslie, who is a teacher in the
schools here, remained at home with
her. Miss Emma Shannafelt sup
plied for her during her aiisence.
Sund.iy School Growing.
The M. E. Sunday school surely Is
growing as last Sunday nearly one
hundred and forty persons were In
attendance while a year ago last Sun
day only one hundred and nine were
there. The Increase Is due to Mr.
Pollock's untiring efforts to build up
the school and to the great interest
which the activities have aroused.
Miss Cole Itelurns.
Miss Vera Cole is back in Joseph
after a stay of several weeks in Bak
er county.
New KdiliiM Welco'ite. .
N. B. Pentreath, businc manager
of the La Grande Evening Observer,
was in Joseph last week and while
here made a visit to our schools.
He announced that soon the Observer
would print a morning edition for
Wallowa county, which is truly a
big favor to us who now must wait
for from 16 to 2 4 hours after the
news Is printed to get It, but when
the new edition is out we get it the
day It is printed.
Mrs. Holmes Visits.
Mrs. V,'. R. Holmes was In Joseph
