It was found that after hnvlng Jour
neyed all the way from Hollywood,
California, to l'ortlnnd, Oregon, to
take scenes In a prominent hotel
there for Julian Kltlngc's second
Paramount picture, "The Clovor Mia.
Carfax," that Uio lighting facilities
were Inadequate; that In to ny, In
sufficient current precluded the poss
ibility of making interior scenes In
that particular hotel.
There was considerable discussion
and much chagrin, but finally Don
ald Crisp, the director of the picture
"The Clever Mra. Carfax," hit upon
the Idea of having all the sections of
the big hotel lohby flashllghted.
From these pictures the entire lob
by wob reproduced nt the huge Para
mount studioB at Hollywood, Cali
fornia. '

be hard to beat.
"The Clever Mrs. Carfax" waB
written by Hector Turnbull and
Gardner Hunting arranged it for the
screen. The 'director, Mr. Donald
Crisp, was also the -director of Mr.
Klllngo's first production, "The
Countess Charming," which proved
ono of the screen sensations of the
season.
"Thol Clever Mrs. Cnrfax" will be
shown at the Arcade Theatre Friday
and Saturday. ' ' '

A familiar figure In fiction, the
army officer who has been unjustly
convicted of betraying bis country
comes to the front as the central
character in "Fighting Back," a five
part Trianr.tO melodrama taken from
a stoi " by lai ty Hhumate, tho scen
ario by Ahin II. Neltz. Dance hall
and ranch life In tho west are deplet
ed In the play. When first Intro
duced the officer is staggering pain-'
fully across tho dCBert, rugged and
footsore. He haB escaped from pris
on and his disgrace has evidently de
prived him of all his spirit and man
hood. He finds refuge on the ranch
of JameB Newton, where ho becomes
known sb the Weakling and Is made
the butt of the other cow-punchers.
On pay day tho boys drag him off to
town and force him to enter ono of
tho dance halls. A gill named
ta attracted by him but bo rep
iter. Later on she arouses the hid-
den courage of the man and bo fights
nnd overcomes China aiex, the pro
prietor of the dnnco hall and free3
the girl from the man. He then
lakes her back to his old command,
determines to make a desperate at
tempt to establish his Innocence and
finds that a confession by (ho real
culprit haB restored lits reputation.
Wm. Desmond haB a strenuous
part that he carries with conviction.
Gl'iire McDowell plays the Fury with
her usual capability as an actress.
Jack Richardson. Curley Baldwin,
Pete Morrison, William Elllngford,
Thomas H. Guise, Thornton Edwards
and Josie Sedgwick lent efficient aid.
Tho production, directed by Ray
mond Wells, calls for commendation.

ROTTERDAM, Jan. 24 Although
Gorman news agencies continue to
assert that the Drltlsh hospital ship
Rewa, which was sunk recently in
the Bristol Channel, must have been
destroyed by a mine, there are in
dications of a fresh campaign against
hoBpital ships. These take the form
of a revival of the accusations of mis
use of the Red Cross such as pre
ceded earlier crimes.
' A significant article appears In the
Kolnlsche Volko Zeltung. Opening
with' the assertion that Spanish offi
cers left their posts as neutral ob
servers on British hospital ships be
cause they discovered these ships
were carrying troops supposed to be
suffering from fever, but really quite
healthy, the paper says:
