who left here last summer ns a mem
ber cf Troop D. is in a hospital in
Hobokcn, J., and v,a3 to have been
operated on for appendicitis tho sev
enth of this month, according to a
ieltcr which has just been received by
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. 13. Nut
ter of o09 East Court street After
he lius sufficiently recovered, ho ex
pects to be granted sufficient leave
to permit him to come home for n
few days and visit. He and his par
ents formerly lived in La Grande.
Ho says , that he is in a Catholic
hospital and that the doctors who will
operate are skilled professional men
and that he has no fear of the result
of the operation. 1Ie had just had
dinner before he wrote nnd said it was
"nice, just like I used to get at homo,
hut not so good.
The young man's letter is filled with
inquiries about his friends here, and
he is anxious for news and letters
from them. Tho days are long for the
hoys who have left their homes and
especially so for such as ho who must
spend their time confined awny from
his fellows.
His brother, Earl L. Nutter, is en
listed in tho aviation service end was
in training at Houston, Texas, for n
time and, in commenting on his broth
er's enlistment, he says, he realizes
tho sacrifice that his parents arc mak
ing, but says: ''We aro fighting for
freedom and right. Some of U3 are
never coming back, but they will be
remembered."
Enclosed with th-: letter was a hit
of verse which the lad wrote while in
the hospital and which perhaps gives
his feelings more truly than does his
letter. It follows!
A SOLDIERS' VISION
Whiie lying in bed in a hospital
In old Camp Greene one day.
My thoughts all seemed to wander
Out west to the fields of hay.

And I joined the troop with the res':.
And now as I view my comrades,
I feel v.e are doing our best.
We enlisted in Pendleton, Oregon,

Hut now we are heavy artillery
And soon going over the sea.
To all who arc interested in us,
To mothers, sweethearts and w ive?.
We will be back some day to claim

That is, if we don't lose our lives.
And if such a thing should happen.
Of course, some of us must;
But nlwnys remember our motto,
Which is. "In God is our trust.'
Our hospital is in North Carolina,
And southern folk all treat us well;
Hut our memory always lingers
liy the farmhouse near the well.
And when this world war is over,
And peace again is restored,
And I can go out west again,
1 will ask no better reward.
