Was a time when fewer promising
lightweights were scintillating around
the country. The men who are be
lieved to have a chance to topple
Benny (Leonard from his throne as
lightweight champion are all men who
have been battling for years and
Years. There isn't a man who came
opt over night.
- Willie Jackson looked to be this sort
of b man for a few brief moments,
and then he flivvered. Jackson's name
is rarely mentioned now as a probable
opponent for the champion.
." There is just one good boy, who
comes to mind among those who
haven't yet been given a looking at
the championship. He is little Billy
'Whalen, a St. Paul lightweight.
. St. Paul has given so many high
class fighting men to the game that it
goes without saying' Whalen is a
plucky, hard-fighting little individual.
Mike Gibbons trained the youngster
through all his early days of battling,
and the little fellow looks and acts
like the St. Paul wizard.
' Whalen hasn't been rushed to de
struction. He is going through a
course of sprouts that may lead him
up to a championship battle. He had
met fome excellent boys and most of
tnem no has won Irons. He is grad
ually growing into the select class of
top-notchers.
And Whalen is the only lightweight
of tender years who stands out as a
probable opponent some of these days
for the championship. Leonard evi
dently has overlooked this youngster
in his policy of stepping out and cuff
ing ambition out of all the youngsters
who look as if they might make some
trouble.
Leonard declares there is little
fighting in sight for him now, for he
has gone to work as a boxing instruc
tor at Camp Upton, Yophank, L. I.
Benny came in for considerable criti
cism for the manner in which he kept
away from this camp after receiving
an appointment, but he has stepped
into work now, according to reports.
Leonard announced immediately after
he won the lightweight title that he
would join some branch of service, so
the criticism was coming his way
when he didn't get into it. r
MILLER THROWS O'CONSELL
Portland Wrestler Is Bested hy the
Champ'ion at Marsh field
MARSH-FIELD, Jan. 14. (Special.)
Five hundred persons witnesses the
wrestling match between Walter Mil
ler, welterweight champion of the
world, and Eddie O'Conneli of Port
land yesterday afternoon at the Noble
theatre. Miller obtained two straight
falls, in 56 and 17 minutes. The
match was pleasing to the crowd, who,
however, thought the first fall went
too long.
. La Grande Wins, 61 to 14
The basketball game between the La
Grande High School and Union, which
was played Saturday evening, resulted
in a score of 01 to 14 in favor of La
Grande. Union played a very good
game, but were unable to make the
baskets. The La Grande boys dis
played some very good team work.

UNION NOTES
UNION, Jan. 14. (Special.) Omer
Moore, a former resident of this city
and a graduate of Union high school,
was married December 2f in Newberg
to Miss Nellie Taulsert. Miss Taulsen
is a teacher in the Portland public
schools. ' The newly wedded couple
will make their home in Portland.
Mr. Moore is well known here.
Born to Mr. and Mrs, Dell Irwin,
Wedneday, January S, a son.
Word was received here this week
that David Kennedy, a former Union
boy, son of Mrs. F. D. Kennedy, who
was at one time in the millinery busi
ness here, has enlisted in the navy.
David has been attending school at the
0. A. C. during the past year and he
enlisted from there, according to the
report.
Dean Upton, son of Mr. and Mrs.
J. D. Upton of this city, has been
transferred from the U. S. S. St. Louis
to the destroyer Trippe. Bean is mak
ing rapid strides in the navy and
greatly enjoys the life.
The local order of the Woodmen of
the World held installation at their
regular meeting last Monday evening
and installed the new officers for the
year, A fair-shed membership was in
attendance. The local order sf the
W. O, W. has the largest membership
of any of the lodges in the city. Fol
lowing are the new officers; Fred
Brown, past commander; Ed Contort,
consul commander; John T. Reeves,
adviser; L. A. Wright, banker; Percy
Rollins, escort; Cedrie Gale, watch
man; Morris Miller, sentry; p. H.
Crouter, manager. W. O. Miller neted
as installing officer.
