In these days when all of us are asked to be thrifty
and saving, one of the first things we think of is to buy
less and to save as much as possible on each purchase
when we do buy. As a matter of fact, this is a good plan
to follow at all times; but there may be a tendency on
the part of some of us to carry on our search for "bar
gains" too far from home.
"We don't want to forget that the trade we take away
from our own community helps to build up some other
community or city from the growth and prosperity of
which we do not ourselves get any benefit. If your home
town merchants ask you a higher price than you are asked
to pay by outside merchants for the same line of goods, it
isn't any more than fair to discuss the situation with your
home storekeepers, giving them a chance to explain why
their prices are higher than those you can buy for else
where. There may be some reason that will be worth
while learning about some difficulty which you can help
straighten out to your advantage as well as theirs, if the
matter is brought' up for frank discussion.
You and your family and your neighbors like to trade
at an up-to-date store. If such a store can be made pos
sible by co-operation between you and your neighbors and
your ideal merchants if a strong pull-together feeling can
be established in your community then that community
will be progressive, will forge ahead towards better
streets, better roads, better schools, better places of
amusement, better and more influential churches, better
social and business advantages for yourself and your
young folks. It is this spirit of community co-operation
that almost invariably results in good for all concerned
if it is kept alive and actively participated in by one

There is no question but that the
merchants of the Bitiull cities and
towns are facing a serious situation
as a result of the Increasing com
petition offered by tho mail order
houses. So much has been 8.id and
written about tlieniail order etll
tilt It has become somewhat of an
old story, nnd, like all old stories,
it docs not receive the attention It
deserves. The merchants nnd the
newspapers of small communities
have "cussed" tho mall order liousos
for a good many years, and tho pub
lic, seeing the local merchant still
continuing to do business at tiie old
stand in much the same old way, has
been inclined to look upon tho mer
chant's call for help like a cry of
"wolf."
It is probably true that most mer
chants in small towns arc still doing
business In about the same old way
In spite of the mail order houses
and that few of then probably have
actually been driven out of business
by the catalogue houses, but the
point which tho buying public has
not grasped is that these merchants
ought to be doing business in a fash
ion much better than "tho same old
way." and the reason that they arc
not ns a class is because they are not
receiving tho support ot tiio people
of their communities.
Another point which the people of
the smaller communities have seem
ingly overlooked and it is the crux
of the wholn proposition Is that the
failure of the local merchants as a
class to prosper and expand In line
with the general industrial and eco
nomic development of the country is
not a matter of bo much Importance
to tho Merchants themselves as It is
to the other citizen of tho commun
ity in which they are doing business.
People say that they are under no
obligation to rupport the merchants
in their town. Probably thifi is true
in some cares, but they are under ob
ligation to themselves nnd to their
wives and children to maintain such
prosperous conditions In their com-
