does it care to have you reminded that it does pot employ any one in YOUR commun
ity or HUY anything from YOUR farmers, and it is equally concerned that you be
not reminded that it does not extend you credit or trust you for anything. As a mat
ter of fact the mail order house does not want to see your local merchants progress,
which is equal to saying it does not want; to see your town build up and prosper ft
has no; interest in YOU or YOUR eorinnuhity whatever.' " All it Vi'ints is yoiU'; money
and it wants that in advance even before you see its merchandise. These are just
a few of the reasons why these mail order civic center destroyers should be left alone

on butter, eggs, and potatoes. This
loaves only one-third of a grocer's
stock, principally, luxuries, upon
which he has a leeway In profit suf
ficient to make up losses that may
be iDcurred on licensed commodities.
Heretofore, grocers have sold about
one-third of their goods on a basis
below overhead expense sugar,
flour lard, butter, and eggs princi
pally. That lert two-thirds upon
which to adjust a living profit bal
ance, whereas under war conditions
the profit balance is confined to one
third of tho stock. This situation
makes It necessary to eliminate ev
ery Item of expense not absolutely
essential, and the next few months
In the grocery trade will be trying
ones. But it is expected that war
conditions will make betlermerch
ants, with mora ability to operate
economically, and secure legitimate
profits by Increasing volume of
trade.
