money concealed on bis person- But
the light-fingered gentry sod strong
armed fellows have found other fields
more lucrative, according to a New
York correspondent of the Pittsburgh
Dlsiintch. '
The big street Is now the stamping
grounds of "weary Willies" and bums
whose only vncution Is to panhandle
the price of a drink. So one day re
cently, when the old familiar cry of
"Stop thief was heard the Bowery
frus almost paralyzed; everybody
stood still and watched for the culprit
Soon they saw a tall, lean and hungry
looking youth darting under the ele
vated pillars, but they made uo effort
to catch him. When the cops arrived
on the scene the man had disappeared.
"Where did he go?" bellowed one with
a club, who held It threateningly over
several men who stood In a doorway.
"Did you sec that guy running this
wuyt Where did he go? Come 'mi,
now." But no one had seen the thief.
While ihe cops were making their
search upathotir. cringing men eaine
from the different doorways to learn
what the excitement was all about.
"My God," remarked one frowsy look
ing Individual, us the cops departed,
"1 was scared It was some guy offering
a Job." Aud appreciative chuckles
went up along the line.

the coast guard cutter Snohomish
goes the honor of firing the first shot
on the Pacific after the United States
entered the war:
According to the story on the Se
attle waterfront, the cutter sighted
a Norwegian steamer sailing down
tho coast at a fast clip. The Sno
homish signaled the vessel to halt, In
accordance with the patrol regula
tions. But the Norwegian continued
at the same merry clip.
The cutler then opened fire, laying
a shot across the bow of the speed
ing vessel. The Norwegian steamer
promptly stopped. Tho officers of
the cutter laid dowb the lnw to the
Norwegians and the two vessels went
on about their business.
