FIGHTING FOR FKEEDOM

President Wilson's last message to the Congress of the
nation must surely have solved the question with the
divine flash of eternal truth.- It not only yhu-cs him
rightly by the side of Lincoln, it not only gives heart to
America, it not only tells our enemies that in us there is
no vindictiveness, no desire for small and petty revenges
nor national lust of power, but above and beyond all it
proves that America battles for the high and mighty pur
poses of Universal Freedom and permanent peace.
The message today has permeated every quarter of
the globe. It will stay the hand of Russia and weaken
Lenine and Trotzky In their wicked dream of the, delivery
of that Cossack giant from Prussian domination. It will
force Japan to further effort in the cause of the Allies;,
it will put heart in sorely pressed Italy, I Selgium and Ron
mania. It will put power into the high purposes of the
Latin American republics. It will teach the few remain
zing European neutrals to beware of further bolstering up
- the cause of a military autocracy doomed to extinction.
But above and beyond nil it Will show to the common
people of Germany that Wilhelm has deliberately and
maliciously lied to' them, and that he has, like a riotous
madman, misrepresented the motives which prompted
America to enter the woeful strife.
. We have set our faces to the sun. We have announced
through our inspired spokesman that we shall fight on.
with every drop of blood and every material thing which
we possess, until with the firing of the last gun, freedom
.and democracy is made safe for the generations yet un

WING, FIN AND FLEET FOOT CLUB DOES GREAT
THINGS FOR FISH AND GAME IN
GRANDE RONDE VALLEY
.' The Wing, Fin & Flcetfoot Club of
La Grande, of which L. M. Hoyt is
president, is doing great things for
tho Grande Ronde Valley and is also
hacking Hoover's conservation of food
campaign to the limit in their own
way.
The membership of tho club is 125,
with a most efficient secretary in
A. V. Andrews, and it is known as
one f the most nctivo fish and game
clubs in Oregon. The main objects of
the club arc to preserve game animals
and birds and all game fish, and to
increase their number yearly and at
the samo time sec that thero is plenty
of fish and game in the valley for
sport. Six years ago this section was
almost fished out ami the stato sent
a carload of trout fry to La Grande,
but owing to cu'elcs-ness on the part
of Bomeone who had no idea of how
delicately tho fry had to he handled,

Tho club has constantly grown In
memlwrship and every member is an
enthusiast.
Tho club intends to nssist tho state
by stocking this valley with China
pheasants, and its Rtreanis with trout.
They hnvo a number of pheasants at
tho'poorfarm, which they are feeding,
and ns soon as the hunting season is
over, a certain number will be re
leased, and tho balance kept for breed
ing. More birds will also be pur
chased from the stnte game preserve
The streams will also be stocked with
trout from tho slate fish hatcheries
and tho streams kept full of the best
food fish in the world.
Every year the club holds an annual
fish day and banquet at the Foley
hotel, nt which the prizes are awarded
to tho forlunato sportsman who
hooked the largest fish during the
senson. Last year six prizes were
awarded for various "points."
The annual rabbit drive is nlso
feature of tho club and not only help?
to keep down tho destructive jr.ik
rabbit, but also furnishes many a
meal. At tho last dive tho club
donated 500 rabbits to the Baker City
Snlvation Army, and several hundred
to the local Salvation Army.
Preparations have been made tc
protect and feed the deer nml game
birds this winter in case the weathci
should turn very cold with heavy
snow.
