Painty Vivian Martin, the winsome

seen at the Arcade on Friday and
Saturday in a picturizution of Paul
West's clever story "A Kiss for Susie."

Murth, since she has been informed
that thousands of-young girls through
out the country are looking to her as
an authority on maidenly fashions, ia
constantly on the alert for the latest
creations and even went so far as
to have tho description of one of the

one town they won such popularity
that they determined to enlarge their
troupe, so one of Bessie's castoff dolls
vaa dressed up in shredded wheat to
repreent a Hula-Hula dancer.
Harold Goodwin, as Peter, Bessie's
little playmate, conceived a plan to
amass a large fortune. A sugar barrel
was secured and these words printed
on it: "For men only. Price 1 cent."
It was not long before news of this
spread like wildfire, and all the vil
lagers from far and near came to see
the mystery. After paying the re
quired price they were permitted to
look into the barrel, where thoy be
held Bessie's Hula doll gazing up at
them with a strange fire in her eyes.
This delightful picture will be
shown at the Star Theatre today and
tomorrow. j

Dr. M. K. Hall, chairman, La
Grande Chapter Red Cross, today
gave the following statement to the
Observer:
"La Grande Chapter American Red
Cross Monday shipped one box of
knitted supplies for the army to
headquarters in Seattle, containing the
following articles:
"Fifty-one sets, each containing one
sweater, one pair sox, one pair wrist
lets, one scarf.
"Twenty-four scarfs.
"Fourty-six pairs wristlets.
"Fourty-eight pairs sox.
"Two. pairs bed sox.
"Seven helmets.
"These artices were made by the
ladies of La Grande, Joseph, Enter
prise, Lostine, Wallowa, Elgin, Union,
(Jove, Ladd Canyon, Imbler, Summer
ville, Hot Lake, many of whom are
members of the Red Cross, and many
fof whom are rot.
"This shipment is in addition to ten
boxes of surgical dressing and hos
pital supplies which were shipped
about two weeks ago.
The officers of the chapter are
grateful for the work done by the
ladies throughout the two counties,
which probably has enabled these two
'counties to send the first shipment of
: knitted articles to reach headquarters
in Seattle. The spirit exhibited by
these ladies, the majonty of whom
'hove no relatives at the front, is, we
believe, not excelled by that of any
people anywhere.
j "The greatest difficulty that those
; directing the work have met with is
that of obtaining material, especially

being almost exhausted. They have
received very valuable aid from some
of the merchants of the several towns
throughout the two counties, who es
pecially in one instance, have gone far
to obtain yarn.
"It has been a mutter of regret to
those in charge of the work that the
rules of the American Red Cross ab
fcolutely prohibits them from selling
any of the supplies in their posses
sion, and especially yarn, to individ
uals desiring to mukc articles for rela
tives at the front, or to anyone what
evor. "Such action is considered unfair
to the merchants as they supply ma
terial to the Red Cross at wholesale
prices. Red Cross money cannot be
used for any speculative purpose and
j therefore we are not allowed to buy
or sen.
"The short-iec of yarn has been, and
is such, that although headquarters at
Seattle intended to buy iarge quanti
ties of this material and distribute it
I to the different: shunters, brunches nnH
' auxiliaries, so far they have been un- f
