ted a position to teach in the grade

who has taken the Iowa school near
Mt. Glen.
Sees the Boys Drill While in Port
land last week H. J. Ritter, a. local
photographer, who is a Spanish-
American War Veteran, visited Clack
amas and saw the La. Grande boys
drill. : He saw them when rev'ewed by
the governor pass the reviewing stand'
without a break and ecualled if not
surpassed all of the companies. The
boys will appreciate this praise com
ing from a veteran. . . '-
Forrest -Ivanhoe : Honored News
has been received' in La Grande that
Forrest Ivanhoe.' son of Mrs.' A'. E.
Ivanhoe, had been honored by being
given a banquet by tee graduau ng .
class of tne yeoman s school at the
Naval Training Station at San Fran
cisco. Tine boys engaged a banquet
hall at one- of the prominent restau
rants and served a special menu for
forty. Mr. Ivanhoe was the guest of
honor in recognition of the many
courtesies he had shown the boys since
he has been head of the school. Tha
school also recently presented him
with a ff'ne sword and his wife a box
of chocolates in recognition of her in
terest in the boys. Mr. Ivanhoe has
"had charge of the school since last
December. This was a special duty
and it is now drawing to a close, air,
Ivanhoe has worked himself up iro the
U. S. navy by close study and atten
tion to duty, until now he is a com
missioned officer in the paymaster's
department and on account of his qual
ities of leadership his friends predict
for him rapid advancement.
Red Cross Entertainments Any or
ganization or society that wants to
give a benefit for the Red Cross is
requested to communicate with Mr.
Fred L. Meyers at the La Grande Na
tional Bank. It is desired to eive a
scries of benefits for the Red Cross
this fall.
Boys Annoy For several evenings
recently a group of boys, about eigh
teen or twenty, ranging in age from
nine to fifteen years, have been con
gregating on the postoffice lawn, and
have been tampering with bicycles
and autos. Last Saturday night they
stole the valves from some of the
wheels of boys who had gone to the
show, and also gathered some rub
bish from the gutter and threw it into
the side door of the Arcade, where it
became very offensive to the aud
ience. .
Accepts Position In Mines Ernest
Patty went to Homestead last week,
where he has accepted a position in
the copper mines. For some time past
he has been time-keeper of engine
men of the O.-W. here. He is learn
ing to be a mining engineer having
studied along that line for 21 years
at the University of Washington in
Seattle.
Fills Pu'pit In Absence of Pastor
On account of the absence of the
pastor of the Lutheran Church, Prof.
P. W. F. Fredericks, D. D. of the Pa
cific Theological Seminary, Seattle,
Washington, gave a very interesting
sermon Sunday at that church on the
need of young men for the ministry,
especially fn our western country. He
emphasized the fact that recruits for

ant as for the U. S. army, and that

automobile coming down Depot street.
Mr. Griffin' was. thrown over Mr.
