Two harvest hands arrived here
yesterday in their own car from
Navada to seek work in tho harvest
fields here. It seems odd to see a man
drive up in a car and nak for work.
The meeting of the missionary so
ciety of the Christian church was held
Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. The at
tendance was good and the program
excellent. One new member was
added.

On a card received by Rev. Upton
H. Gibbs, from J. W. Laughlin, of
Damarriscotfa, Maine, the latter
writes that he is in the service, First
Lieutenant Medical Corps, U. S. A.,
and expects to be in France before
long.
Mr. Mathews of the Dwight-Ed-
wnrds Co. is calling on the local trade
today, having just completed tho Wal
lowa County district, and arriving
here this morning from that country
in his car.
Ray Buum visited his folks up on
Mt. Emily last night. They are campi
ed up there for a week after huckle
berries. He reports that they have
quite a few berries and had the ex
citing experience of killing a rattle
snake Monday. Mrs. Baum was with
in a few feet of it when sho discovered
tho snr.ko and upon giving the alarm,
Will Garrick, one of the party, shot
the snake. It had seven rattles.
A party who has received a letter
from one of tho soldier boys in, train
ing at Clackamas tells us that the
writer of the letter is a teamster for
the Quartermasters Department, and
that he has to get up at 3:30 and
"hit the ball" until nine at night, on
account of preparing for the incoming
of more troops. Otherwise the hours
ate 4:30 for arising Mid then eight
hours drill during the day. That will
be pretty hard on some of the boys
who are not used to getting up so
early.
George M. Gray and wife passed
through here on a return visit to their
former home in lower Cove. About
tho last of Juno Mr. Gray bought a
big stocks ranch near Hoppner and
they have been living there since that
time. Ho has contracted the sheep
that he bought with tho stock ranch
for $13.50 a head for the older ones
and the lambs for $9.00. , He sold
a 'bunch of sheep some time ago for
$io.uu a head for the old ones.

Dear Mother: Just a line before
we pull into port. Have been to sea
for three days and a half. I don't
get seasick although day before yes
terday morning I didn't feel very well.
On the whole though I like the sea
fine.
I saw a school of porpoises the oth
er day and several whales yesterday.
The porpoises were real close in, in
fact they followed alongside the ship
for quite a while and then just flap
ped their tails and left us behind as
easily as a freight train leaves a
tramp. The whales were farther out.
I just went down to sick bay to
get a boil on my neck fixed and they
put a dressing on that feels like a
box-car hanging onto my head.
I expect to get a letter when the
mail orderly gets back this afternoon.
I ought to get one from Nell; too, as
I wrote her just before we left and
told her how to address it.
Well, I guess I'll close now, as I
have some work to do. Write often
and tell me all the news.
