Pauline Frederick, the screen's
greatest emotional actress, has tem
porarily forsaken her customary
"heavy" roles and in her latest fam
. ous Player-Paramount picture, "Her
Better Self" is seen as a young so
ciety butterfly in love with a heavy
serious young doctor.
The story deals with the way Viv
ian Tyler, pampered daughter of
wealthy parents, successfully bridges
the vast gulf of poverty which yawns
between her and the man she loves
who is charity doctor.
When their muttual attraction for
each other has brought about a sit
uation almost demanding that he pro
pose to her, he is forced to tell her
that their marriage would be utterly
' Impossible. "You could iot stand
even a week of my life,'' he told her
bitterly.
The way she secretly plans to take
this test, coming to his sanatorium,
to help and mingle with his co-workers,
but is at last discouraged, not by
' the endless squalor and drudgery of
it but by discovering what she thinks
is a love affair between him and a
girl of the streets who worships him,
makes a situation that is thoroughly
dripping in its intensity and great
"human interest."
Returning to her home, Vivian loses
all interest in her life and allows her
parents to announce her engagement
to a foreign Baron whom she secretly
despises. The latter urges an early
wedding, but a telephone cnll from the
young doctor brings her back to him
to try again.
But the girl who had caused their
first misunderstanding soon widens
the gulf between them by committing
sucide. The blame attached to the
doctor who chivalrously allows him
self to be indicted because he thinks
he is shielding Vivian.
The tangle of circumstantial evi
dence is at last unwound however by
Vivian horsclf and the happiness of
the lovers only heightened by their
terrible experience.
Paulino Frederick has given an ex
ceptionally fine interpretation of this
difficult role and is most ably sup
ported by a splondid cast including
Thomas Mcighan, who has been seen
with Miss Frederick in most of her
recent productions, Frank de Rheim,
Armand Cortez, Alice Hollister, and
Maude Tomer "Gordon.
MARY PICKFORD COMING
Mary Pieiford's timely photoplay,
"The Little American," staged under
the personal direction, of Cecil B. De
Mille, will open at the Arcade theatre
next Monday and Tuesday. The btoty
by Jeonie Maepherson in collaboration
with Mr. De Mille, is of particular
patriotic appeal and offers many
stirring chapters from the book of
the great war across the ocean.

A Captain has an epaulette with
two white bars.
U A Major has an epaulette with a
gold maple leaf thereon.
A Lieutenant Colonel has an epau
lette with a silver maple leaf.
A Colonel has an epaulette with a
silver spread eagle thereon.
A Brigadier General has on epau
letto with one silver star.
A Major General hus an epaulette
with two silver stars.
A Lieutenant General has an epau
lette, with three silver stars.
A General is exceedingly rare. Thus
far in our history there have been
only two. They were Washington and
Gront.
To Take Over Shipping
Washington, Aug. 3 ('Special)
Plans for taking over for operation
all American ocean-going merchant
ships soon will .be announced by the
American shipping boaftl. Charters
will be requisitioned under a recent
act of congress authorizing the presi
dent to commandeer tonnage for gov
ernment uses.
