The ranks of filmdom's stars have
a new recruit the Imperial Valley
cantaloupe. Moving pictures, show
ing the exteut of the new industry,
and the extraordinary care taken in
seeing that the melons are safely
transported to all portions of. Ameri
ca, have been taken, and will shortly
be shown all over the country.
In this connection Southern Pacific
officials say that the Government is
assisting in experiments intended to
still further encourage the industry.
Nine carloads of cantaloupes were re
cently sent out of Brawley. each car

RAILROADS OF COUNTRY
HAVE BEEN NATIONALIZED

The statement given out here last
spring that the inability of the rail
roads to handle the country's in
creased business was largely responsi
ble for the high cost of living is be
ing answered in a most practical way,
according to Daniel Willard, chairman
)Kf the Committee on Transportation
of the Council of National Defense.
Since war with Germany was de
clared, this committee, 'through co
operation . with the war board, has
.nationalized the 693 railroad com
panies of the country so that they
operate practically as one system, thus
eliminating much of the waste of dup
lication. Through this unification the
roads have not only been able to trans
fer all troops on schedule, without
interfering with civil traffic, to the
entire satisfaction of the war depart
ment, but they are handling at the
same time, without congestion, over
3,000,000,000 more ton miles a month
than a year 'ago, or an increase of 16
per cent.
In -spite of this increased busi
ness they have - decreased the gen
eral car shortage one-third since May
1st. They have increased the prac
tical supply of cars by 779,00p through
heavier loading, quicker repairs,
quicker handling, iby pooling ship
ments at hike and seaports thus re
leasing cars immediately and by uti
lizing box cars' that formerly were
sent to the coast empty. They have
given preference to coal shipments,
particularly for the government and
its allies. Twenty-nine per cent more
bituminous coal was handled in April
this year than in same month of 1916.
Second preference has been given to
ore shipments which have also in
creased enormously.
The grain situation has also been
greatly improved. There is no grain
being held at any point because of a
car shortage. The entire deciduous
fruit crop will also 'be handled satis
factorily. To further this, efforts are
being made to supply cars where
needed by transferring empty cars
from one section to another regard
less of ownership. All passenger
trains not absolutely necessary are
being removed from service.
