. Sunday, May 27, 1917. At last we
are settled in France and ready for
work. It seems good not to pack up
and journey on for a few days then
unpack and begin all over. We had
a wonderful trip all the way from
the United .States to our final stopping
place. The weather has beero perfect.
No accident of any sort and everybody
haying a good time. While in London
we were most royally entertained.
Queen Alexandria awarded us , the
Royal Red Cross and we were each
(presented to her. Then we were pre
sented to King George, Queen Mary,
Princo of Wales and Princess Mary in
the garden of Buckingham Palace.
Ambassador and Mrs. Page enter
tained us at tea and presented us to
the Duchess of Marlborough, Captain
and Mrs. MoDougall, Mrs. Bradley
(wife of Colonel Bradley) Lady Wins
ton Churchill and v Mrs. Whitelaw
Reed, who entertained us at tea thie
following day at the Claridge Hotel.
Sir Thomas Lipton called and present
ed each nurse a shamrock pin. Am
very proud of mine. Harry Lauder in
vited us to one of his performances
and met us on the stage afterwards.
We even explored the dressing rooms
of tho stars. ,The joke was on us.
The leading lady, Miss Tomlin, and a
star, Flora Craner (our hostess) gave
us the flowers from their corstge bou
quets. Come to find out, our doctors
'had sent them the flowers. Everybody
in England and France have given us
a most cordial welcome.
Coming through this time of the
year has given us the treat of a life
time, to see this part of the world at
its best. All the trees were in full
bloom, the wisteria is in blossom, the
hedges are green and all the gardens
are wonderfully cultivated. The scen
ery here is equal to that of our own
fair Ohio valley.
Can you imagine what it is like to
sleep on an army cot without sheets,
m army blankets? We have very
comfortable quarters and plenty to
cat. Saw Kenna Dugan two days ago.
He has been having a very good time,
looks well, and was not sick from the :
vaccines. The weather is very warm i
during the day and cold at night.
When the peasants saw our flag
coming into France they gathered in I
masses and shouted "Vive la Ameri-1
cane." Many wondcrf ul things have !
happened to us, coming as we did, the
first part of the United States Army,
000. At first France proposed to

bankers decided against so large a
sum. The loan will yield 5 1-2 ier
cent to investers.
Thi3 issue will bring Japan'3 finan
cial aid to the allies up to $135,00,000.
Russia in two loans, has received
$60,000,000; Britain wos given $50,
000,000 last December, and now
Franco receives $25,000,000.

Camp Kelly, July 11, 1917. Dear
Mother: received your welcome let
ter yesterday. , I have been awfully
busy lately. I am working on an
aeroplane every day. I am no longer
corporal, for I was made a sergeant
today and also chief of crews. What
do you know about that? haven't
heard anything regarding my lieuten
ant examination yet but I guess 1 will
wfoen they get to it. I wish I could
see you for I could tell you everything
but I haven't time to write. I simply
don't have time to write as mucli and
as often as I would like to. Cecil told
me about Letha being there the 4th
It sure has been some hot here b!ic
last two days.' Was 110 or more to
day. I received a letter from Mrs.
Harris and will answer as s:ni as I
have time. It is so dark now thnt I
can hardly see. My pay now is $45 or
$48 a month I think. I don't just
know for there are different rntes of
pay. I hope everything is going well
with you. I am feeling all right but
I sweat so much I am getting a little
wim. I don t know when or whether
we will leave hero or not for we may
stay here until we go over the water.
The Germans seem to be getting the
worst of things now, and I hope it
keeps up.
It is too dark to see and I am tired
anyway so good-bve for this time.

Spokane To Hove Apple Show.
Spokane, Wash., July 20. (Spe
cial) .Plans for tho 10th National
Apple show as outlined at the first
meeting of the trustees, show a rad
ical departure from former exhibi
tions. Instead of featuring competi
tion in the box displays, stress will
be laid this year upon food value and
marketing. Instead of street frolic
and carnival features, there will be
patriotic and historic pageants in
keeping withi the military spirit of
the hour.
Elaborate demonstratior? will il
lustrate Herbert C. Hoover's Jeclara
tion that the apple is a most valuable
food product especially during war
times. Methods of preparing apples
for the table, preserving, canning,
evaporating, and scores of other prac
tical uses will be given. Prominent
educators and experts will deliver lec
tures daily. Housewives will be shown
the economic value of the many uses
to which apples can. be put.
Another department will include
commercial and marketing features.
Packing demonstrations, orchard
cultivation, spraying, grading and
kindred matters will be handled by
men of national reputation. A big
apple auction modeled along the same
lines as those held in eastom fruit
centers will be held.
In the patriotic and historic pa
geants, the dominant purpose will be
to emphasize the fact that whilo the
country has responded in a large
measure to the call of the nation, it
must be borne in mind that the war
will probably continue three years or
more. It is the hope to make ihese
pngeants illustrative of 'the sacrifice
made in former wars by patriotic
peoples and to carry the lesson of en
during patriotism during the present
conflict.
