RAISING
What a big job it is raising an army I The United States
, has been in the war over two months. It is remarkable
that in that space of time we have been successful in trans
porting our troops across the seas, one of the most re
markable feats in history. Now we are to begin raising
our hig army. In a few days the soldiers will be drafted.
Those who are called will report for physical examinations
' and :to make their claims for exemptions. The United
States is now engaged in building cantonments or camp
houses for one million men at a cost of $75,000,000. This
will be done in twelve weeks. No small job in itself. But
the houses will be ready for the boys when they report
about September 1. The American soldiers will be the
best equipped and the best taken care of in the world. They
- will be well trained before they go in the trenches. Un
cle Sam is tackling a big job and he is doing it thoroughly
and well as he docs all things after he gets started.'

THE RUSSIAN DRIVE.
The Russian 'drive is one of . the most hopeful signs.
Its rapid progress at the present tune is conclusive proof
that yon.Hindenburg had withdrawn his best troops from
the Eastern' to the Western front. If the allies could so
co-ordinate and harmonize their actions abd strategy,
so as to stridor. lall fronts at once for a definite period of
time the.Germans would have a new problem .to face. As

Diversified Farming

Diversified Farming Is Not Mere Rotation of Crops.
Diversification is not as narrow and limited in its meaning as "rotation
of crops. iRotation in farming simply means changing the character the
of crops. Rotation in farming simply means changing the char
acter of the crop grown on the soil each year, while diversi
fication means all of this, and, in addition, opens up the great field of animal
husbandry and every development and change to which the farm mav be
susceptible. '
Diversification means that the average farmer should not overdo nor
go too far, nor too extensively into any one crop or feature of farming. In

distributing your work ami risks through all the seasons and farm oppor
tunities, with no tremendous effort and concentration, no big gain or loss
at any one time or in any one thing, but with something doingl someth'nir
going to market and some profit coming in all the time. s
