ETHEL CLAYTON AND CARLYLE
BLACKWELL AT ARCADE TO
DAY AND TOMORROW.
Evil only to him who evil thinketh
is a philosophy wfiich has covered a
multitude of sins in moving picture
scenarios but it's a theory which has
no part or parcel in the scheme of
things for Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle.
Clean, wholesome photo comedies, free
even of the suspicion of a suggestion
of double entente, are his product and
continued adherence to this policy is
his purpose.
"I shall produce nothing that will
offend the proprieties : whether ap
plied to children or grown-ups" said
Fatty the other day in talking over
his plans for comedy two-reelers in
which is now being presented by Jo
seph M. Schneck and which are re
leased through Paramount Pictures
Corporation to all exhibitors. "My
pictures are turned out with clean
hands and therefore with a clear con
science which like virtue is its own re
ward. "Children in attendance at moving
picture shows," continued Mr. Ar
buckle, "sometimes have occasion to
ask their parents some rather em
barrassing questions about what is
being unfolded before their eyes but
this has never happened or will hap
pen at any of the pictures I have di
rected myself or will direct. In the
three years I have been producing my
own comedies I have never had a sin
gle elimination which comes pretty
near telling its own story.
"Really there is so much good fun
to be gotten out of life that there is
no necessity of resorting to question
able methods in order to win a laugh.
Besides the comedian should never
permit himself to lose sight of tho
fact that comedy pictures are the es
pecial delight of the children and the
principal reason for their patronizing
the movies. Heavy dramas of course
do not appeal to them, because they
do not understand them. Therefore
a screen funny man assumes a re
sponsibility towards children which
cannot be regarded lightly, even by
the man whom the public thinks never
takes anything seriously.
"As a matter of fact getting com
edy over on the screen is the hardest
kind of film work and not the least
important feature of it is protecting
the morals of the young. Pictures, of
course, moving or otherwise, make a
deeper impression on a child's mind
than written or spoken words and for
that reason alone it is necessary to
constantly exercise caution that tho
subject being filmed does not get out
of the moral focus.
"Nothing would grieve me more
than to have some mother say 'Let's
not go there today, Fatty Arbuckle
is playing and he isn't fit for the
children to see.' I want them to al
ways speak otherwise of me for as
long as I can please the kiddies I
don't care who entertains their elders.
They have got to go where the chil
dren go anyway and if I can pass
muster in the oyes of tho rising gen
eration my mission in life is accomplished."

Following is a brief outline of the

Captain Ford, U. S. A. is sent down his real mission secret, Gwynne con-
