splendor,' are some of the descriptive

A very prominent La Grande insti
tution, so local business men tell me,
buys all its supplies outside of La
Grande. Other La Grande institutions
nnd some public officials send their
printing to Portland. This is a very
fine way to build up n town.
Elks Win Praise.
The action' of the Elks in voting
$250 for the Red Cross and also $250
for the La Grande hospital unit has
caused much favorable comment, and
the attitude of Delegato T. . Scrog
gin and alternate H. J. Ritter in sacri
ficing their rights to the trip to Boston
to the Grand Lodge is also receiv
ing much praise. The Elks may be
relied upon to support any worthy
patriotic cause.

Today's War Recipe.
(From Britain's official win-the-war
cook-book.)
I Scalloped Parsnips One pound of
boiled parsnips, two tablcspoonfuls
margarine, one teaspoonful grated
Parmesan cheese, pepper, salt, and
a dash of cayenne, milk as required,
breadcrumbs. Mash the parsnips to a
puree, nnd mix in the fat, seasoning,
j and cheese. Add sufficient milk to
make the mixture of a creamy con
j sistency. Pour this into greased scal-
loped shells or small saucers, sprinkle
; a fow crumbs over each, and bake for
eight or ten minutes. Any cold cooked
vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots
: or turnips, may be scalloped in the
' same way.
(It is far more important now to
save bread than money.)
