There are several reasons.
Butfirst of all comes the million

that is always in reserve for the

That "sureifies" the OWL'S
mellow flavor. All the equip

OWL factories go to bring out
that fine flavor in the best

iTHE FORUM;
The Meaning of "Baptism."
La Grande, July 22. (To the Edi
tor of the Observer) It was not my
intention to engage in a controversy
over the word 'TMiptizo.'' I merely en
deavored to point out, that the un
qualified assertion that this word nev
er means other than immersion, is not
correct. I stand by my former letter,
which Mr. Ford 'has not upset though
he quotes extensively to prove some
thing -which I never disputed. I still
maintain that there are instances in
the Bible where "baptizo implies
pouring, and that this word is used
in a general technical sense to include
all ceremonial lustrations whether
by immersion, pouring or sprinkling.
As to early Christian testimony,
outside of scripture, I mentioned "The
Teaching of the Twelve Apostles,"
which is the earliest of all Christian
manuscripts extant. Its date being
generally assigned to A. D. 120. This
gives pouring as a permissible mode
of baptism, if immersion is not prac
ticable. We do not know its author,
but he sets down what is the teaching

of the Apostles concerning certain
matters, not his own opinions. As the
apostolic tradition was still fresh at
that date, it is not likely he would
try to foist something which had not
apostolic authority. I notice that my
Baptist brethren try to moot his testi
mony by the method known in court
as abusing the opposing counsel. They
discredit the writer and his work.
As to infant baptism, I still main
tain that it was practised from the
very beginning when whole house
holds were baptized. It is most, like
ly that if I thought of baptism as
Bro. Ford probably does, I would not
see anj necessity for children to be
baptized. 'But according to the teach
ing I have received, baptism as a life
giving sacrament, is as necessary to
the child as to the adult. I do not
wish to discuss the theological aspect
of this sacrament in a newspaper. 1
will only say that if I had not been
baptized as an infant and thus made
"a member of Christ, the child of God
and an inheritor of the kingdom of
heaven," I would not be where I am
today, but long ago have been sub
merged in the mire of sensuality and
vice.
I have read tho objections of those
opposed to infant baptism and they
are all to my mind excessively super
ficial or else their view of baptism is
a very limited one.
As to how the requirements or raitn
and repentance are fulfilled in the
case of infants, it would tako too long
to show. But they are fulfilled and
that in accordance with recognized
principles governing a contract or
covenant with minors. And let me
add, that if this can not be done for
infants then there can be no vicarious
atonement for adults. The principle
which justifies the latter being .ef
fectual for an adult, justifies the
vicarious pledge of repentance and
faith for an infant in baptism.
I am off to the east. This is my
last word.

Picked Up By
The Stroller
I strolled into Arch Bacon's and
bought a cigar and the boys told me
he had all his front teeth pulled out.
I asked him about it and ho didn't
answer me. Maybe he thought it was
none of my business. Come to think
about it, I believo ho was right at
that.
1 strolled into the Observer office and
asked the petite bookkeeper if tho
"wild Animal Editor" was in. She
looked at Mr. Loiter and he said:
"Speak up, tell the gentleman that
you are she."
"I absolutely refuse to be the wild
Animal . Editor," she said. "You be
her yourself, you're wilder than I am."
And she grabbed a ledger .as if to
throw it at him or me.
"I'm wild enough at time to be put
in tho cage with the lions," he said.
"Anyway I'm tho friend of tho boys
and girls, and I'm thinking seriously
of going to the circus Tuesday after
noon with tho kids."
"No, you're not," said the aforesaid
petite bookkeeper. "I'm the wildest
and I'm going to be the wild Animal
Editor and take Tuesday afternoon off
myself and take tho kids to the circus
and buy 'em pink lemonade and pea
nuts, see the elephants and sich. You
can stay hero and get out the paper,
and receive the kicks, and answer the
'phono and take in cordwood for subscriptions."
So the momentous Question was fin
ally settled.
As I strolled out, the wild Animal
Editor looked very peaceful behind
the bars of hor cage, and she smiled
at me and said: "Maybe, if you'll buy
the peanuts and lemonade and pay
for your own ticket, you can go
along."
Sour Stomach.
This is a mild form of indigestion.
It Is usually brought on by eating too
rapidly or too much, or of food not
suited to your digestive organs. If
you will eat slowly, masticate your
food thoroughly, eat but littlo meat
and none at all for supper, you will
more than likely avoid the sour stom
ach without taking any medicine
whatever. When you have sour
stomach take one of Chamberlain'
Tablets to aid digestion. Adv.
