KATHLYN WILLIAMS AND THEO
DORE ROBERTS AT ARCADE
TONIGHT.
Two of the most distinguished
stars of the photodramatic stage,
Kathlyn Williams and Theodore. Rob
erts, will be seen at the Arcade to
night only, in the Lasky-Paramount
production of Bculah M. Dix' thrilling
story, "The Cost of Hatred," which
was produced under the direction of
George Melford. '
The story of "The Cost of Hatred"
has to do with Sarita and Justus
Graves. Graves, a stern, harsh man,
, D. W. Griffith's latest spectacle 'Mn
tolcrance," which opens at the Arcade
. tomorrow for a two-day run, is such
an extraordinary theatrical offering-
that words fail to convey any idea of
j its magnitude and: grandeur,, its
marvelous spectacular effects, its hu
man interest and its amazing irepro-
duction of historical events. In. "In.
, tolerance," there are four separate
stories, each with its own set of char
acters. Ancient Babylon, Judea of the
time of Christ, Paris during the reign
of Charles IX and a modern Amen
can city are the scenes of these stor
ies. Such film stars in Mae Marsh
Robert Henron, Seena Owen, Mairgery
Wilson, Minam Cooper, Lillian Gish
Tully Marshall and Bessie Love have
the leading roles.
For the past six months this Grif
fith masterpiece has been playing to
crowded houses at the Liberty thea-

Draft Will Bring
Health Survey of
Over 2,000,000
Women Are Recognized.
Washingtmi, June 21. (Special)
Women employed" by the navy depart
ment are to receive the same pay as
men holding similar positions.
Under the provisions of the selective
draft bill at least 2,000,000 young men
between the agea of nineteen and
twenty-flve will be subjected to a rigid
physical examination to determine
their fitness to serve In the army
which the administration plans to
train to a high point of efficiency for
possible service In France.
This will be the most widespread
physical survey of the vitality and
health of the nation ever made. Dur
ing the civil war many more men were
examined tn tbe course of four years,
but never as ninny within the time
which will be devoted to the examina
tion of the young men who are to make
up the new fighting force of the United
Stntes.
Just what the machinery will be for
the examination of the young men of
today has not been determined. The
physicians and surgeons of the coun
try are being organized rapidly by the
general medical board, appointed at
the Instance of the Council of National
Defense.
This organization within a short
time will reach Into many thousands
of counties. It already has been start
ed In more than 3,000. Whenever their
services are required these men can
bo called upou for medical examinations.
There are about .7,000,000 men of be
tween nineteen and twenty-flve in the
country. It Is estimated that probably
5,000,000 of theso will be exempted for
ono cause or another, principally be
cause their services would bo equally
or more valuable In present vocations
than at the front Large numbers also
n 111 be exempted on nccount of having
encudeiit relatives and many because
of serious physical defects.
Exempted Not Examined.
The medical forces of the entire na
tion would not bo ndequato to examine
carcfullv all of these men physically.
It would require a year or more for the
work. Consequently men In the ex
empted classes will not be examined,
While this will modify the value of the
nation wide health survey, the number
to be examined throughout the states
will furnish a fair Index as to the rela
tive physical stamina of each commu
nity.
Eminent physlclnns and surgeons In
the army, navy, public health service
and those connected with the general
hoard of the Council of National De
fense are looking forward to the results
of the physical examination of so large
a numlier of young meu. Persons luter
estcd In social welfare are equally in
terested in the project
lb Is entirely probable that men will
be passed Into the array who hnvo minor
defects who are now consistently re
jected. But no man who Is physically
deficient will be permitted to get by
unless he manages to fool the examtn
lng surgeons.
There are two reasons why great care
will be exercised In the examination of
young men for all branches of the gov
ernment service. The first Is to Insure
a fighting machine as nearly perfect as
possible. Another Is to guard the pub
lic treasury against another great drive
by pensioners. Uncle Sam Is willing to
pay any man a pension who Incurs dis
ability In the service, but be Is desirous
of reducing the number to a minimum,
so far as It Is possible to do so by de
termining the exact physical condition
of recruits at the time of enlistment
The wholesale examination of young
men for military service, together with
the examinations now on for enlistment
the big Increase In enlistments for the
navy and murine corps and for several
classes of reserves should give the coun
try a valuable survey and throw much
light on the general state of the public
health.
The first Increment of riOO.OOO for the
selective draft army Is to be mustered
in Just as soon as registration Is com
pleted: or not later than Sept. 1 and
possibly a month earlier.
