which the ex-policeman took a hand.
Horton was a member of a "mop
pingup brigade," the men who follow
the first assaulting waves and clear
the captured ground of Germans. He
found 17 Germans in a dugout. Hor
ton had left his gun behind, but alorfe
and undaunted he charged the 17 Teu
tons. The first one he knocked un
conscious, and two or three others
who ran out to meet him 'he knocked
down. The rest then threw up their
handes and yelled, "kamerad." The
entire 17 were taken prisoners.
1 Later Horton was shot through the
neck and is now in a hospital. The
description of Horton's single-handed
charge of 17 Germans was written by
Detective James Ellice, formerly of
the Vancouver police department, who
took part in the same charge as Hor
ton.

Cook-Book)
Boiled Pork Put the joint of pork
into a large stewpan and cover it with
warm water. Bring this to a boil, re
move any scum that rises, and boil
for ten minutes. Add an onion and a
carrot (cut small), with a dozen pep
persorns, and simmer till the meat is
done. If the pork is very salty, put it
on in cold water instead of hot. Any
joint of pork can be cooked in this
way.

Notice is hereby given to all con-.
corned that the Commission of the
City of La Grande, Oregon, purposes
and intends to improve Section 7 of
Sewer District No. 1 of the City of
La Grande, Oregon, 'by constructing
therein, according to plans and speci
fications therefor adopted by said
Commission on the 23rd day of May,
1917, an eight inch sanitary sewer,
with all necessary manholes, catch
basins, wye branches, excavations and
fills therefor, from the present sani
tary sewer of said City of La Grande
at the center of Jefferson avenue at
a point thereon opposite the center
line of the alloy running north and
south through block 17 Grandy's addi
tion to town of LaGrande, Union coun
ty, Oregon, and extending north along
the center line of said alley to the
center lino of Grandy avenue in said
Grandy's addition, and to assess to
the real ptoperty in said Section 7 of
Sewer District No. 1 specially ben
efited by such improvement the cost
of such construction; that the bound
aries of the district to be affected and
benefited by the said proposed im
provement are as follows: Commenc
ing at the center of the intersection
of Second street and Jefferson avenue
in Grandy's addition to the town of
La Grande, Union county, Oregon,
and running thence north along the
center line of Second street to the
center of the intersection of Second
street and Grandy avenue in said ad
dition, thence west along the center
line of Grandy avenue to the cen
ter of the intersection of Grandy ave
nue and First street in said Grandy's
addition, thence south along the cen
ter line of First street to the center
of the intersection of First street and
Jefferson avenue and thence along the
center line of said Jefferson avenue to
place of beginning; that the report
of the committee on estimates for
such proposed improvement has been
approved and adopted by the Com
mission of said city and the same and
said plans and specifications are now
on file in the office of the Recorder of
said city where they may be examined
and said Commission will meet on the
27th day of June, 1917, nt 7:30 o'clock
p. m. at the Commission room in the
City Building in La Grande, Oregon,
and there hear and determine all ob
jections, remonstrances and claims of
grievance by any and all persons in
terested therein.
