Contardo Eaccini, a La Grande
shoemaker, received a letter from his
father who 1b also a shoemaker in
Ligonchi, Italy.' Ths letter is a curi
ous sight. Here and there through it
the military censor has gono through
it and carefully clipped out with a
scissors portions of it evidently refer
ring to the war. Only the personal
'parts of it remained. So while Bac-
cini knows that his father is well, he
does not know how the Italian people
regard the war or how it is progress
ing or when the Italian people be
lieve it will end.

Grand Old Man of La Grande.
John Stotts, aged 91 yews, was the
grand old man of La Grande of Tues
day. In 1846-48 he fought valiantly
with tho Federal forces in Mexico and
marched into Mexico City with the
victorious army. Although of recent
years he has been in feeble health at
the home of his son, James, in this
city, he was better Tuesday, and it
was with pride that ho participated in
the conscription parade, the fourth big
