received the Nicolay and Hay sot of
looks, the "Life of Lincoln" in ten
volumes, as a gift from the Lincoln
Memorial association of Oregon. This
is an authorized and only adequate
life of Lincoln. The ten volumes
give an accurate picture in popular
form of the heroic r.ge of 50 years
ago. It is not the only accurate his
tory of those times, but it is the only
accurate and complete history of
tchse times which tells the story in
such a manner as to justify the hope
that the public in general will read it.

day afternoon in honor of Miss Neal
who is soon to become the bride of
Mr. Lester Emmons also of the Slope.

Washington, D. C, May 29 ( (Spe
cial) The United States Government
is going into building on a large scale
to house the new army of 1,000,000
;men. Thirty-two towns are to be
erected at the mobilization camps,
each capable of providing for about
22,000 soldiers, a division of Infantry.
They are to be called cantonments,
jand each will be a complete little city
in itself. The plans are all made.
The locations are now being selected
by the various department command
ers, and as soon as the camp sites
ere chosoni the surveys will be made
and contracts will be let. The con
struction work will be done by con
tract, under the supervision of Army
officers.

Portland, May 28. (Special)
Cattle Today's .receipts totaled
about 700 head, which were mostly
all grassers of ordinary to fair qual
ity. There were only a couple of
loads of real good beef here. De
mand was mostly from Valley butch
ers of which there was a long string.
Prices for the day were on a good
strong basis compared with last
week's close. Live killers are all well
supplied at present on account of the
heavy receipts last week. Best beef
steers brought $9.50 to $10.00 with a
few fair to good grades at $8.75 to
S'9.25; medium to ordinary grades
brought $8.00 to $8.C0 with prime off
grades going at $7.00 to $8.00; best
cows bringing from $8.00 to $8.50
medium grades $7.00 to 7.50; thin
dairy cows sold from $4.00 to $0.50.
Best heavy bulls brought around
$7.50 with good light bulls from $6.50
to $7.00; light Jersey bulis sold from
$5.00 to $6.00.
Hogs Hog market was generally
steady with a fairly good supply. A
few lots of light hogs brought $15.60
to $15.75 with four loads of strictly
fat 225 hogs brought $15.85 to $15.90.
Pigs were unchanged bringing $13.00
to $14.00.
Sheep The sheep market is un
changed. There was only one bunch
of valley sheop here today; good
spring lambs brought $13.50 with
shorn eyes at $10.50.
MODERN MILLING AND ELE

Weiser, Idaho, May 30. (United

milling and elevator plants in the Pa
cific northwest is under construction
here for the Weiser Milling and Ele
vator compnny. The elevator will
have a capacity of 225,000 bushels
and the flour mill will turn out 650
barrels a day. Flour and seed ware.
