In an effort to turn the voters of
Benton, Lnie, Linn and Marion Coun
ties against the road bond bill, C. E.
Spence, Master of tho Grange, is mak
ing the unfounded assertion that none
of the money raised from tho bonds
will be exepnded on roads In the Wil
lamette Valley south of Multnomah
County; that all of the money Contrib
uted by Willamette Valley counties In
automobile licenses and in taxes from
the quarter mill state road tax will be
required and will he expended In com
pletlng the Columbia River Highway,
The plain facts are:
1st. Reliable engineering estimates
secured by the Highway Commission
agree that $1,750,000 will complete the
Columbia River Highway from Astoria
to The Dalles.
2nd. Multnomah County pays 37
per cent of the state tax and 40 per
cent of the autamobile license fees but
under the highway plan embraced In
tho road bond bill not one cent of tho
money so paid will be expended in
Multnomah County.
3rd. Multnomah County will pay In
automobile fees and state road tax ap
proximately $2,400,000 which Is more
than sufficient to 'complete tho Colum
bia River Highway and leave a bal
ance of $650,000 to be applied on other
roads. These figures do not tiike Into
account tho amounts that will be paid
by Clatsop, Columbia, Hood Itlver and
Wasco counties which..-will also bo
available for completing the Columbia
River Highway. The amounts paid
into the fund by tboBe counties will
further reduce the amount of Multno
mah County's contribution to the Co
lumbia River Highway and leavo a
considerably larger sum than $650,000
to be applied on the 1'uclfic Highway
and other roads contemplated in the
road bond bill.
4th. Not one cent of tho money
paid by counties of the state, other
than that contributed by Multnomah,
Clatsop, Columbia, Wasco and Hood
River coumties, will be required to
complete the Columbia River Highway
and the other roads outside ot tho
counties enumerated.
6th. In other words, under the $6,

The New Mexico will burn oil exclu
sively and will be the first battleship
built by any nation equipped with tho
electric drive. This system of propul
sion has been thoroughly tried out lu
service on the collier Jupiter and has
proved extremely satisfactory.
It has been pointed out by naval
critics tlint the main battery arma
ment apparently 1b not ns powerful
as that of tho Queen Elizabeth and
other' modern fighting ships of the
British navy, but that an Inch differ
ence in the big gun cnllber could not
have an appreciable effect In a great
sea tight.
Gun Shoot Far Enough.
It Is admitted that the fifteen Inch
guns of the Queen Elizabeth have a
greater range than the fourteen Inch
rifles of the New Mexico by something
less than a mile. But according to
naval experts the New Mexico's four
teen Inch rllles will shoot as fur as the
spotter's range ilndcrs and fire con
trol olllcers cun see, and when a battle
ship Is engaged by tho enemy at sea.

when It is Impossible to spot tho shells
as they fall or record hits when tho
aim Is right?
Officers sny tho fourteen Inch guns
of tho New Mexico will throw shells

sel armed with tho heavier guns would

The New Mexico will have a con
centrated bow and stern fire of half of
the guns brought to bear lu her broad
sides. When she tires a broadside It
will cost about $12,000. The estimated
expense of firing a fourteen inch rifle
is $1,000.
