House Peters and Barbara Tennant in
Stirring Picture.
The story of the .World Film pro
duction, "The Closed Road," with
House Peters and Barbara Tennant in
the leading roles will be the attraction
at the Arcade theatre today and tomor
row. The picture opens with two
New York physicians congratulating
each other upon the almost certain
discovery by Dr. Annersley of a cure
for cancer. Julia, the doctor's sister,
enters and states that she left Gris
wold. an admirer, at the door. Her
honor and has failed to pay it.
Dr. Annersley writes Griswold de
manding payment within twenty-four
hours, threatening physical violence
in the event of his failure to pay. A
short time later Griswold is found
murdered in 'his apartment. The
threatening letter from Dr. Anner
sley and the doctor's pistol are found
in the room. Annersley is arrested
and circumstantial evidence fastens
the crime upon him. How his sister
Julia succeeds in having him freed,
and having Frank Sairgeant, whose
doctor has informed him ho would not
live two months on account of the
weakened condition of his heart, take
the blame for the crime I,atcr tracing
the murder to old Or. Appledan, who
confesses that he gave Griswold an
overdose of medicine nnd used the

Germany Let Letter Telling of the
Hunger Go Through After
Adding That Line.
An account of German cruelty that
Is almost unbelievable came through
the malls to a resident of Wilmington,
DeL That It was allowed to pass the
German censor, it Is believed, is due to
the fact that the individual handling
this piece of mull desired to Impress
upon the world at large the punish
ment the German government' imposes
upou thoso who question the kaiser's
authority or opinion.
The letter came from a German wo
man whose sister is one of that city's
most respected residents. The writer
said there was a lack of food of all
kinds la Germany, that what they bad
was of un Inferior quality and that old
people were dying because of a lack of
nourishment The writer referred to
the pitiful sights in German homes
where there are children. Sho said the
people were aroused to a. point of des
peration over the food situation and
that they felt that their loved ones
wero being sacrificed to Prussian
prldo. They placed the blame on tno
kaiser.
Further on the writer said she had
suffered so much and her family bad
been bo reduced by the want of food
that sho felt as though she could kill
tho kaiser If sho found the opportunity.
All these details the German censor
permitted to pass.
Then at the bottom of the letter was
a Hue signed "Tho Censor."
"Your sister was executed this morn
ing," this line read.
PRINCETON'S RESERVE UNIT.
War Department Recognizes Universi
ty's 900 Students Now Drilling.
The 000 students who are taking in
fantry drill work at Princeton univer
sity have now been ofilclnlly recognized
as a reserve officers' training corps uult
by the war department. This news,

High Schools Will Debate.
Debating teams from Silverton and
Joseph high schools, winners in a
field of 72 contestants, will decide the
state championship in a contest at '
Eugene on the evening of May 11. The j
subject of the debeate is compulsory
health insurance. All expenses of the !
two teams will be met by the Uni
versity, and to the winner will go
possession, for one year, of the an
nual University of Oregon state cham
pionship cup.

SENATOR CHAMBERLAIN
URGES GOOD ROADS
Oregonlan News Bureau,
Washington, April 24. (Spe
cial). Senator Chamberlain to
day expressed his hearty ap
proval of the proposal to build
hard-surfaced modern roads in
Oregon paralleling the Pacific
Coast. lie declared that such
roads through all tho Pacific
Coast states would be of the
greatest military Importance.
"While not familiar with the
details of the Oregon road plan,"
said Senator Chamberlain, "as
I understand It, that plan will
provide roads which, from a
military standpoint, are most
necessary. Rut, as a matter of
fact, we should have such roads
paralleling the Coast line from
Canada to Mexico. First-class
hard-surface roads would afford
ready facility for transporting
both troops and supplies up and
down the racific Coast in the
event of military activity on
that Coast and would greatly
augment the railroad.
"Koads such as those would
hare the highest strategic val
ue and ought to be built, but I
do nt believe the Federal Gov
ernment at this time has the
money to build them."
