"It will amaze outsiders, but (Iodb

t'o know that not one of those scores
of swimming girls who are mermaids
in the picture escaped either injuries

"The gigantic tides that whirl in
and out of St. Anne's Bay, Jamaica,
tugged and pulled at these mermaids
and dragged them over rough, jagged
rocky ledges not once but dozens of
times as the girls were sent back to
their positions to be photographed
again and again in nearly similar po
sitions. Twice two of the young beau
ties narrowly escaped drowning and
were rushed ashore in launches to re

BEAUTY IN THE PICTURE
1LOUS.
PER-
The thousands of spectators who
have sat spell-bound before certain
scenes of "A Daughter of the Gods"
which come3 to Sherry's April 28 and
29, have wondered whether Annette
Kollermnnn in the title role of Wil
liam Fox' picture beautiful was no;, in
actual peril of being dashed against
tho jagged rocks, as she sought to
make a landing from the thundering
sea while bound hand and foot. There
is no camera trickery in these thrill
ing scenes. They were actual as the
reality could make thorn, and on sev
eral occasions the star of the million
dollar picture was taken unconscious
from tho surf. A first aid crow, with
o regular hospital outfit, accompanied
her and the two hundred pretty mer
maids during all of theso dangerous
demonstrations.
In swimming the real motive power
is derived from the outward kick of
the legs, the arms merely serving to
keep nlloat the tipper portion of the
body. A mermaid having her lower
limbs immovably encased in a tail ap
pendage of glistening scales is de-1
pnved of the propulsion so essential
to a" swimmer; and only by long and
continued practice can this dilllculty
be overcome. Put a swimmer thus

County Agriculturist Paul H. Spill
man, recently received a letter from
Paul V. Maris, county agent leader of
Corvallis, giving a solution for the in
adequate supply of labor to plant the
normal acreage of crops.
' Mr. Maris states that the following
plan has been adopted for meeting
this situation: "By arrangement be
tween this office r.nd the office of Pub
lic Employment Bureau of the Port
land office, each county agent office is
hereby designated as a branch Public
Employment Bureau of the Portland
office. And you are asked to give wide
spread publicity to this fact immedi
ately and call upon tho farmers of
your community to report their labor
i demands to you. You will transmit
: these orders to N. F. Johnson, director
Public Employment Bureau, Portland.
! Mr. Johnson will have the co-operation
I of the Chamber of Commerce, the
1 State School officials, the Governor of
the State, and such other agencies as
will be necessary to make the labor
available.
"There are for example, 10,000 boys
in the schools of the state over 11 and
under 20 and it is reasonable to as
sume that there are in the neighbor
hood of 10,000 over 15 and under 19,
the minimum military age. Th"re are
also in the neighborhood of 5000 men
in Portland not regularly employed.
