AMERICAN GAIN CONTROL OF
BRAZILIAN COFFEE CROP
Rio de Janeiro, April 20. The next
Brazilian coffee crop is estimated as
between 12 and 13 million bags of 132
pounds each. The extraordinary fea
ture about this crop is that about two
thirds of these bags will be bought,
sold, shipped or otherwise handled for
the first time by American business
interests represented hero in Brazil.
War and American! enterprise consti
tute the reasons.
The British blacklist, the shortage
of shipping for European (ports ,lack
of financial support and the departure
of Germans to their own country to
fight opened the door for Americans
to take the coffeo business from the
Germans.

Lima, Peru, April 20. (United
Press) Charges that a number of
important officers were implicated in
a plot for a naval revolt are under
investigation by the Peruvian govero
'ment today. The conspiracy is said
to have been hatched in retaliation
for the arrest of certain naval com
manders. Tho ministry of marine
gained1 an inkling of the situation and
promptly dismantled the guns on the
warships besides disabling the ves
sels engines by removing essential
parts of each which were locked in the
arsenal under hoavy guard.
