Of Their Kind, Are Built In Chicago
The Disturber V. and the Kanawha Are Yachts That Have
Been Offered to the Government To Be Remodeled
Both Will Be Armed and Operated by the Navy Department.

power enough to make a speed of 75
miles an hour in, still water. Accord
ing to its commander, the Disturber
I VI is strong and staunch enough to
make a cruise around the world at a
( high rate of speed. It is to be manned
I by a crew of 15 men who will take it
east as soon as water transportation
opens up through the lakes.

Two submarine chasors, planned to
bo the speediest o; their kind, are
being constructed in Chicago and
within a few days will be on their way
to the Atlantic seaboard. For ob
vious treasons, the place of their con
struction and the timo of their de
parture is kept secret hy their owners
and the government. The two boats,
which their owners expect to be of
inestimable service as submarine
chasers, are the Disturber VI, owned
by Commodore James A. Pugh, and
the Kanawha, owned by John Borden.
The Kanawha, which will carry four
to six pounders and two machine guns
is 225 feet long r.nd has a gross ton
nage of 475 tons. It has a spued of
25 miles an hour and carries a crew tif
65 men. It was the first yacht to be
offered to the government and is being
remodeled under government super
vision.
The Disturber VI is one of the fast
est boats afloat. It is low and almost
invisible to an enemy at a distance of
two or three miles. Capable of mak
ing a milo a minute, the speed boat,
with its sharp steel bow can be upon
a submarine even before tho com
mander can givo orders to submerge.
It is to be armed with a 4.7 inch gun.
Whether other armament will be cur
ned Commander Pugh refused , to
state. Tho Disturber is being used by
tho government ns a model for the
construction of 200 similar boats. It!

"THE MAN SHE MARRIED.'
Gail Kane the Star of a Five-Reel
Peerless Production Released by
World Film Corporation.

Moving Picture World.)
The five-reel Peerless production,
"Tho Man She Married," was adapted
from la story by Harold Vickers. It
is dramatically effective. Starting
with the marriage of the heroine to a
sharper who is after her money and
who robs and deserts her, tho events
are caried along to the big situation.
Although far from novel, having re
ceived in tho lust 40 years the en
dorsement of a number of prominent
French dramatists, tho situation has
lost none of its ability to score. The
preceding threads of the plot aro
woven into tho author's design with
skill, and tho Tcsult is a story that is
theatric, but maintains a firm hold on
the interest of tho spectator from first
to last reel.
Gail Kane, in the character of Be
atrice Raymond, tho young heiress
who is tricked by a mock marriage, is
an excellent selection for the part.
She indicates tho confiding nature of
the woman, and makes her course of.
action consistent throughout. She
also meets tho demands upon her emo
tional powers with an adequate re
sponse. Arthur Ashley's performance
of Ralph Somple is a smooth piece of
forceful acting of a gentleman who.
looks upon the world as his own in
dividual oyster. Montagu Love gives
a thoroughly satisfactory impersona
tion of the likeable Jerry Trainer, and
Muriel Oestriche is the light-headed
but good-hearted Edith Trainer to the
life. Louise M. Bates makes a fair
Ada Semple. Travers Vale's direction
of the picture sustains his well-known
reputation for competent work.
This picture will be shown at the
Arcade today and tomorrow in con
nection with the three act Hippodrome
vaudeville show.
The first show in the evening will
begin at 7 o'clock and tho second show
will ibegin at about 9 o'clock.

Many Apply for Patents.
London, March 22. (United T.sss)
By Mail In the second full year of
the world war, there were 18,686 ap
plications for patents registered at the
British patent office. This represents
an increase of 461 applications over
the previous year. A good proportion
of the applications were made for pat
ents on instruments and munitions of
war. Artificial legs are being per
fected too, the list shows.
It is a curious fact that the only
patent granted an enemy alien since
he war began was issued to a German.
It was a process for "grinding
swords" and licenses have been issued
to Sheffield firms to use the new invention.
Still, no monarch abdicates out of
love for, his country until his loving
subjects show him the door.
