Baker's School Attendance.
Baker, March 31 (Special) Con
tagious diseases including measles,
mumps and chickenpox have made
perceptible inroads in the school at
tendance this month according to the
report of City Superintendent A. C.
Strange.
Mr. Strange states that the total
dismissal of the city schools has been
avoidod only through the diligent co
operation of the teachers in sending
children home when they are believ
ed to be infected or when members
of their families are ill with contagi
ous diseases.

To Discuss Tourist Fund.
Salem, Ore., March 31. (United
Press) Representatives of the com
mercial clubs and county courts from
all parts of Oregon will gather In
Portlnnd Saturday to form an advis
ory committee in connection with the
expenditure of funds appropriated by
tho last legislature to promote tourist
travel to Oregon, Washington and
British Columbia. State officials are
also Interested in the session.
"The conferees will have no renl
power in expending the money," said
Mark Woodruff, director of the North
west Tourist Association, in explain
ing tho nature of the meeting. "But
it seems no more than right that the
various sections of the state should
have some voice in the spending of
the money."
COLLECTION OF ANTIQUE
ARMS ORDERED SOLD
Philadelphia, March 31. (United
Press) The late Samuel H. Austin's
collection of antique arms, worth a
fortune and said to be the most wond
erful collection of its kind in exist
ence, will be sold ut auction in New
York some time next week.
Among the rare pieces are a wheel
lock Italian gun of 1500, a sporting
rifle duted 1628, a triple wheel lock
German pistol dated 1630. There are
400 other specimens of antique gun
nery, all in perfect condition.

Viola Dana Found Many Admirers
When Appearing in Mining
Scenes for Play.
Many of the strongest scenes in
"Threads of Fate," the new Metro
feature with Viola Dana as star,
which will be seen ' at the Sherry
theatre on Sunday and Monday were
taken in the famous coal mining dis
trict around Wilkesbarre, Pa.
The pictures taken there depict the
lifo of the coal miners and their strug
gles with capital.
So enthusiastic were tho Dana
"fans" that the dainty little star had
considerable trouble in going through
with her work without being inter
rupted by a child with a bunch of
flowers for her, or la man or woman
who wanted to tell her how fine she
was in her recent play, "The Gates
of Eden."
But the Dana "fans' also proved
of valuable assistance. They brought
information as to the prettiest spot
for scenic photography, and clamored
for tho privilege of appearing as
"supers" in. "Threads of Fate."
Japan Prepares To
Gain Concessions
Tokio, Mar. 5 (By mail) (United
Press) Much conjecture is being
made here today to how much Ja
pan will add to her already large in
terests in China as a result of the
war, but Baron Hayashi, Japanese
Minister to Peking, here to confer
with Jus government, does not hesi
tate to make it plain Japan is pre
paring to ask China for a large con
cession at Tsingtau, the colony seized
from Germany.
"Japan can dispose of the Shang
tung Railway without waiting for the
peace conference, and it is absurd to
doubt that this railway line will not
come under Japanese influence," Bar
on Hayashi told the newspaper mtn.
"Japan will also ask China to agree
to the establishment of a Japanese
concession at Tsingtau," he continued,
".but whether other foreign countries
will he permitted to establish settle
ments at Tsingtau, as in other Chi
nese ports, is a question which I can
not discuss now."
