THE SUBMARINE WAR CONTINUES.
Daily the press chronicles the destruction of shipping and lives
by the German submarines. Today comes the news of the sub
marining of a Belgian relief ship, without warning, so it is al
leged, with the killing of seventeen Danish sailors. Every day
shows that the ruthless submarining policy is on in full blast.
This will inevitably lead to war with the United States, unless
either one of the powers recedes from its position. It is almost
certain that if the United States goes to war with Germany
other neutral nations will follow. In that event it will be Ger
many, Austria, Turkey and

THREE GOVERNORS ARE COMING.
The officers of the Oregon Cattle and Horse Raisers' Associ
ation are to be congratulated at securing the attendance! of Gov
ernor Withycombe, Governor Lister of Washington, and Gover
nor Alexander, of Idaho, at the convention to be held at La Grande
April 24 and 25. This will do more than any other one thing to
fix in the public mind the importance of the approaching con
vention. 0
FARM U)AN ASSOCIATION ORGANIZED.
The Grande Ronde National Farm Loan Association is now
under way with officers duly elected, a board of directors, and a
committee of appraisers, ('has. II. Reynolds, of La Grande, is
secretary-treasurer. Farmers who wish to join the association
should send in their applications to him.

AN EASTERN OREGON HIGHWAY.
Iii Grande is much interested with' Pendleton, Baker and
other eastern Oregon cities in securing a state highway through
Eastern Oregon which will connect the Eastern Oregon empire
with the Columbia River highway. This is our due. We have
contributed largely to the state highway fund, and it is right that
the money raised by taxation for state highways from Eastern
Oregon should Ik expended in our country. This highway will
be one of great scenic and commercial importance, and the whole
state will be Itenefitted when travel is made possible through this
district.
