vestigating proposed sites for naval
bases are in Portland today, having;

Here's a Real Man
Cleveland, O., Feb. 8. (Special.)
Jtfiss Mildred F. Blake, 18, left a
belated Christmas present on the
doorstep of the home of Robert Nye,
22, with whom she has been keeping
company for six months. It was a
new-born baby boy.
The present was not a surprise to
Nye. In fact, he had told Miss Blake
to leave the baby at his home. But
the plans of the couple to get mar
ried and then adopt the girl's baby
were knocked in the head by the
police.
Miss Blake was arrested on a char
ge of abandoning a minor child. Nye
was charged with falsely reporting to
the police that "a child of unknown
origin" was found on his porch.
The father of the baby was arrest
er several months ago and his case
is pending. The girl said she didn't
want anything to do with him but
wanted to marry Nye. 1 the law
will allow the wedding will take
place.

built hardly any new mileage. The i
transportation plant, so vital to every 1
form of business, has been pretty
nearly at a standstill. j
Every day brings forth fresh evl-,
dence that the transportation plant is .
decidedly inadequate. "Worst car j
shortage in recent history!" reads a
headline of yesterday. Terminals are
some years behind the demands made
upon them almost the whole country
over.
Inadequacy of the transportation
plant and Capital's reluctance to in
vest itself in railroad stock raise some
serious questions in which is involved
the subject of Stato and Federal re
gulation. State railroad commissioners are
pretty generally embattled to retain
the present Bystem of dual regulation
of railroads, and even to extend the
present authority of the state over
national carriers. They want the de
cisions of the Supreme Court in the
Shreveport case which virtually af
firmed the power of Congress to regu
late interestate business amended by
legislation that would give the state
complete control of railroad business
within its borders, irrespective of how
that control might react upon inter
state rairoad business.
Instead of extending the authority
of state over railroad business, Con
gress should exercise its admitted
nower to limit state control within
narrow bounds.
The railroads are a national interest
and should be regulated nationally.

DIAMOND BRIQUET
Diamond Briquets are made from the purest, richest portions of

What the United States Bureau of Mines Says About Briquets
1. The even size of Briquets permits a more regular and thor
ough combustion in the firebox or furnace.
2. Briquets produce much less smoke and in manp cases prac
tically no smoke.
3. They retain their shape in the fire and do not coke suffici
ently to cut off the needed supply of air.
4. They burn to e fine ash without clinkering. Clinkers can be
formed if all the absolute ash is not removed from the grates regu
larly. 5. A Briquet fire requires much less care than one of raw fuel.
Suggestions for Getting Best Results from DIAMOND BRIQUETS
Clean out firebox thoroughly when you commence using Briquets.
Use more kindling than used for lump coal. This will also aid in
keeping chimney clean.
Give the fire full draft until well started. This burns the smoke
and while making more heat also prevents soot.
Check the draft after fire is well started; very little draft is
needed then, and fuel consumption will be reduced.
When adding more Briquets increase the chimney draft while
stove or furnace is open. This will prevent smoke from escaping
into the room.
A gentle shaking will clean the grates.
If you have a strong draft carry some Briqueti ashes on the
grates to help regulate the fire. Briquet ashes are light and poms
and the draft can work through.
For banking cr to hold over night, cut off all draftJ completely
after applying the Briquets. If you wish to bank fires every night,
you will get the oest results by carrying a deep fire, leaving ashes
on the grate.
