Horse Buyers Are Not Offering
Enough to Get Animals It Has
Been Cold in North Powder.
North Powder, Jan. 24. (Special.)
Old King Winter has been having
full sway in this part of the country
the past few days and we might say
several of them. The thermometer has
run lower than 30 degrees below in
town and 20 degrees out in the coun
try. North Powder seems to be the
coldest of any spot in this vicinity.
At least that is the report from all
we can learn. It is rightly dubbed
the "North Pole" by the traveling
public.
Several horse buyers have been
coming into this vicinity to buy
horses but do not eem to be able to
secure many. The farmers are hold
ing lor better prices ana tney are
sure to get them as everyone except
buyers agree that there is a scarcity
of good draft horses p.U over and that
prices will be much higher later than
now. If the eastern buyers are com
ing in early thinking to get bargains
on account of lack of feed or farmers
needing money they had better inves
tigate this section before they try it
as the farmers have plenty of feed
and do not need to sell unless the
prices suit them.
Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Parker have
purchased a new player piano
and are now enioyine all kinds of
music. They are very much pleased
with their purchase.
George Currey of La Grande was a
business visitor in North Powder a
few days ago.
Dr. and Mrs. Law were business
visitors in I-a Grande the first of the
week.
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Gilkinscn were
business visitors in Baker on Mon
day.
Mr. and Mrs. Chris Johnson, Mr.
and Mrs. Charlie Mays and Mr. and
Mrs. Will Coughanour left for Cali
fornia to spend the rest of the winter.
They expects to spend most of their
time at Los Angeles.
A number of the North Powder peo
ple were attending court in La Grande
last Tuesday. Most of them returned
home the same day.
The recent cold weather has stop
ped the grippe which seemed to be al
most an epidemic in this vicinity.
Mr. and Mrs. J. 0. Miller were
passengers on the Tuesday morning
train for La Grande.

Eaton was one of the best known men
in eastern Oregon as he had lived in

Carl Forstrom spent a few days at
his home in Portland and came back
to North Powder on Tuesday. Mr.
Forstrom may bring his family down
later -on in the winter.
A great many are complaining of a
shortatre of fuel but so far there
seems to have been no suffering from
lack of it. A number are borrowing
of their neighbors but there is a wish
for some one to get coal or rather that
the railroad company would let them
have cars to ship in.
The birth of a son is reported to
John McPhee and wife on January 11.
The ice men seem to be the only
ones that are onjoying the excessive
cold weather. They are busy putting
up the second crop and if they wish
will be able to put up a third if the
cold lasts long enough. Mr. Lun has
put up his second crop and the P. F.
E. will have a few more days work
before they finish up.
Some cord wood was brought into
town for sale but as it was offered at
$7 no buyers were found. People ,
think that it was too high even if fuel ,
C. R. Tibbetts is putting in a pri
vate telephone line from his place to
the Law residence.
Dr. Law made a professional trip
toUnion January 17. He reports the
roads well broken and not much snow
in the Grande Ronde.

Those Week End Trips.
Some objection was raised in the
two branches of the legislature to
week end trips to the towns where the
state institutions are located. The
members f the Legislature already this
year have received two invitations,
on from Corvallis, the other from Eu
gene, asking the lawmakers to visit
those cities at the expense of the pros
pective communities and view the re
sults that have been obtained from the
funds which have 'been appropriated
for the use of the University at Eu
gene and the Agricultural College at
Corvallis. The opponents of these trips
assert that the members are pledged
, to devote 4Q daya of the iegialltive
term to nothing but the business of
law-making, that they have no right
to cut off two days from the end of
the week for the purpose of gallivant- j
ing around the country even though
the state is not required to pay the ex-1

adjournment before the end of the
week for any purpose. There may be
merit in their contention but, on the
other hand, it is safe to say that the
j people of the state, generally, would

tho expenses. The appropriations bill
and some other measures are the real
important issues and the large majori
ty of the other bills that become laws
would not be missed if they failed of
