a city wide campaign will be started
to tlnd a better slogan than the one
adopted. Tills contest will be open to
all. an announcement that stirred the
advertising men.
Park For Women Only.
Most, of Hie women workers in shops
and olllces are found In the. eastern
cities and In Chicago, says the Brook
lyn Eagle. West of the latter city
there has been a romantic tradition
that men marry women Instead of
making them work for a living. Hut
evidently times are changing, and It
has remained for Kansas City to es
tablish a provision for working women
which one might Imagine to be needed
in Huston or New York, but hard'y on

This Is nothing less than a night park
for women, from which men are ex
cluded by mi unfeeling police. A
cynical lni!ircr might wonder wheth
er women would mt be afraid to go to
such a park alone, but the report is
that the tennis courts and other recre
ations provided are in full use from 7
o'clock until 10 In the evening. The
idea of the park was to afford oppor
tunities for recreation for young wom
en who have been sitting through their
evenings in ball bedrooms in boarding
houses or moving picture shows, and
the promoters of the plan are elated at
Its acceptance. However, the park is
new yet. oud later reports will be
awaited before the new Idea is widely

order to reduce the cost of living for
its members, the municipality of St.
Etlenne, l-'rance. has placed nt the dis
posal of the Exchange of Labor (Bourse
du Travail) a building in which the

pense food products to their members

A raring of at least 1.1 per cent has
been effected. This netloti Is entirely
apart from any Idea of co-operative
stores, of which there are many In this
district operated by the employees of
various large enterprises.

ficials regarding the comfortable and
sanitary housing of workmen and the
hygienic lodging of the great Influx uf
workers brought to this city by the ex
tension and Increase of Its manufactur
ing institutions. Plans pertaining to

having been held In abeyance, will
now likely be carried out. These meas
ures are not necessarily the result of
present unusual conditions, but. are

THE P0T0SA FOUNTAIN.
A Recent Adornment to Jackson Park
of Dubuqus, Is.
The park board of Dubuque, la., was
recently presented with an unusual
fountain for the adornment of its Jack
son park. The park Is a wooded square

located in the best residential district
of the city and Is an appropriate set
ting for a sculpture so important as
this fountain.
The central feature of Hie fountain Is
the life .sized figure of Potosa, daugh
ter of the Indian chief I'eosta und wife
of the founder of I he city, JiUicii Du
buque. The ligitre is of bron.e In re
lief, set. with lis background into a
heavy granite slab. At the foot of the
slab Is a basin surrounded by a high
granite curb, at the two ends of which
are bubbling drinking fountains of
granite also. The background Is a
heavy muss of evergreen and shrub
bery. In order to appreciale the pose of the
figure ami its sculptural background
one must know something of the won
derful landscape setting of the city of
Dubuque. Potosa is shown as an In
dian girl in native costume standing
on I he shore of the Mississippi at Ihe
foot of a beautiful ledge such ns makes
up the background of the city. She Is
holding liiftli a shell Into which Is fall
ing the trickle from a spring rising
higher in the rocks, and from the shell
the water falls again into the basin at
her feet.
While possessing In the heart of

history and environment, Dubuque is
lust as appreciative or her surround

tion of a park of many acres consist
ing of the sides and upper level of one
of the great river bluffs to the north.
The fountain was presented to the
city by the family of the late Judge
B. W. Lney In his memory. American
